highfly 0 #1 August 9, 2005 I am looking for someone with a bit of knowledge of carpentry and design. I need a computer desk designed with all the required measurements on so I can get the wood cut for it. Basically Im looking for a desk which will hold 3 monitors at head height and an area to put my printer and G5 on. The compartment for the G5 needs to be under the monitors but raised just enough to get to the disk drive. Cudlo 0 #4 August 9, 2005 A) are you constructing this yourself? If so, I am a little concerned that you can't figure out the measurements yourself. B) If you really want to build a custom desk like that then grab a measuring tape. "head height" will be deteremined by the type of chair you sit in and what height you reach in it. The monitor shelf height off of the desk will also be effected by the stand holding the LCDs (I hope those are 3 LCDs on a shelf like that and not heavy ass CRTs). C) Depending on the type of LCD you may not want a shelf. Due to limited viewing angles (granted alot of advances have been made in this regard) limit the "hey that looks cool" areas to sit in front of it. Some LCDs you get even an inch below perfectly level and the colors invert. Also, the two side monitors (given their size) may be too far from center for field of view. Allow enough depth to the shelf to turn them towards you, or make a double angled shelf. D) Its your choice obviously but the "Case sticking up through the desk with a shelf holding it up" design is one of the worst things I have seen. It REALLY makes it a pain in the ass to get it in and out. I have one of those on my desk... it houses my sub-woofer. E) The length and depth of the desk is largely determined by how much room space you have and how much desk space you want. Also important to the depth is how far away can you comfortably read text on a monitor. I can't really give you exact measurements for any of that. I would suggest going to a store that sells desks with a measuring tape, paper, and pencil. Check them all out and take notes/measurements on what you like._________________________________________ "People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid." - Kierkegaard
Cudlo 0 #5 August 9, 2005 Quick question... Just for shits and giggles I went to the apple site to see what video card they had that gave you 3 video out ports... I don't see any... Where did you get the card?_________________________________________ "People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid." - Kierkegaard
highfly 0 #6 August 9, 2005 Thanks for that. I hadnt really thought about the viewing angles etc. It wont really matter though as I will be using 3x 21" crt monitors. (cant afford the nice stuff) Obviously the shelf would be reinforced to hold these. The 3 monitors are for video editing so it wont matter too much about me being too far away from the monitors. The reasoning behind the G5 being in a central position is to keep it up off the floor away from dust etc, but I do hear what you are saying about getting in and out of it. I have a lot of external extension leads to plug into the back so I dont have to keep crawling around on the floor. Do you have a custom made desk? If you do any chance of a pic or 2 Thanks www.myspace.com/durtymac
highfly 0 #7 August 9, 2005 Oh one is coming from my G4 Pbook. I use this to "view" all completed renders etc through my network. www.myspace.com/durtymac
Cudlo 0 #8 August 9, 2005 Nothing wrong with CRTs.. except for being bulky and heavy. As for dust... Unless that thing has an advanced cooling system, you have fans sucking air into the computer. Dust is gonna get inside regardless. Just get a can of compressed air and spray out the inside occasionally (just dont tip the can, they can spray the liquid content out... liquid bad...) Having been on alot of floors installing computers, best solution I found is just putting the case ON the desk. No.. I dont have a custom built desk. Way too much effort and I have way to much other shit to take care of. Just a corner desk. I don't use extra monitors, so it provides ample room for my laptop, LCD, and box to be on the top. I definatly would not have put the case shelf hole in the damn thing. Really only served me as a foot rest/stand for sub._________________________________________ "People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid." - Kierkegaard
monkey1031 0 #9 August 9, 2005 I'll build one for you in my shop... but, it will cost you. pm me if you'd like, i can draw it up on Vectorworks (3D CAD Program). Also, in my former (career) life, I worked in air-freight, so shipping it to you is a done deal... not to pat myself on the back, but I build some pretty cool shit. -smd7
