weegegirl 2 #1 August 4, 2005 Yup. For the last, I dunno... 500 or so jumps.... I have packed maybe 20 or 30 times for myself. Damn near ridiculous. So, for the sake of math, let's call that 475 pack jobs at $6 each. That's $2850 I've spent in the last two years on pack jobs. It all started after a cutaway. I was gear-whoring for a month and didn't feel confident packing all the different rigs. Then I got busy working at the dz and didn't feel I had the time to pack if I wanted to continue to jump as much. Regardless of why, I am SOOOO glad I started packing for myself again. This last weekend I saved probably $90 on pack jobs. AND.... when you pack for yourself they are usually twice as nice. So, how much have YOU spent on pack jobs in the last while? Think of all that you could have done with that money. That's almost 150 more jumps I could have made!!!
RfukfreeflyingW 0 #2 August 4, 2005 NOOOOOOOOOOOOO come back to the lazy side! you shouldnt be packing for yourself... its just no fun. Try talking your packer to sell u blocks of 100 packs! it'll be cheaper! ---- -God, you are the perfect amount of dumb...
bbarnhouse 0 #3 August 4, 2005 QuoteSo, how much have YOU spent on pack jobs in the last while If I am putting in 10 jumps per day on the weekends thats about $400 a month not including tips. (yes I always tip my packer one more pack than he has actually done each day, he deserves it!) I think its a good investment when having to meet every load. peregrinerose 0 #6 August 4, 2005 Although I'm a packer, I don't understand why people pay to pack. Plus several give tips with every pack job. A couple others with brand new canopies often leave 2 pack tickets on the rig. Maybe I'm just cheap, but I can't see myself paying someone else to do something I'm perfectly capable of doing myself. But keep paying us packers anyway, it keeps us in the air!! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
weegegirl 2 #7 August 4, 2005 QuoteThere's only two people other than myself that I trust with packing my main.... I totally agree with you there. Generally, there is only one packer that I use out at Orange. Not to say the others aren't worthy, but at least I have a fair guess at what I'm getting. He's usually consistent, and when he packs me a smack down, all I have to do is show him the video and he makes adjustments. It was the same up at Tecumseh.... one guy, who had me on every load without question. This isn't to say I will never buy another pack job. I'll need to flying video and stuff. But I just love the fact that I've got my own packing game back.
Icon134 0 #8 August 4, 2005 I've only spent about $200 total on Pack jobs... the last time I paid for a packjob was at the dublin boogie when I was jumping in the GSL... that was about 130 packs ago... metalslug 36 #14 August 4, 2005 $6 per packjob ? In that case, I'm feeling quite fortunate. The going rate at most DZs in my country is R25 which translates to $3.88 at current exchange rates. I've only packed about 10 of my own jumps so far. Although I agree that packing for oneself is the best solution, IMO there are some valid reasons for me to use a packer. I honestly believe that most packers can do it better than me. It's a fairly new canopy and I would hate myself for giving it line burn or chopping it (and perhaps losing it) due to my own packing error at an early stage in it's life. Some DZs do not have well shaded packing areas for everyone, so the duration of the packing is sometimes relative to my gear's exposure to sunlight. The money I spend on a 10-minute packjob, as opposed to my 30-minute packjob, is perhaps worth it in those circumstances. Some of the packers at the DZs I visit really need the money, often for more urgent expenses than just jump tickets. I can easily afford to pay for packjobs and dont enjoy packing, so it's a win-win to give them some business. -No 'mericans were harmed during the making of this post. livendive 8 #16 August 4, 2005 Before I got my various ratings I packed for jump money. I packed a lot of rigs. Nowadays I prefer not to pack my main if I can avoid it. Someone else can use the work and I can use the relaxation. At LP last week I packed exactly once...for Gia so she could make her call. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" Elisha 1 #21 August 4, 2005 Hmmm...total money spent on packjobs... Considering that I've only had my own rig for around 10 or so jumps...I only have 79...two were tandems....7 AFF....and my home DZ inlcuded packing in the rental....hell, I don't know, but I've been packing myself regularly know, found out that my main was a Sabre1 and not a Sabre2 as I thought and I HAVE NOT been slammed yet (but some responsive openings - maybe those 1st gen Sabre's get tamed at around 1000 jumps) even with my own packjobs....I need the practice anyway. I'll probably do it most of the time.
AMax 0 #22 August 4, 2005 The most important safety issue associated with using a packer is not learning about gear from the very beginning and not paying attention to gear maintaince on regular basic (which is a direct result of ignorance). There was a lot of discussion who must stow the brakes and uncollapse the slider but I believe it is more or less clear that packers are paid to pack it in. It is not their responsibility to pay attention to damaged grommets, burned fabric, twisted break lines, worn out closing loops ect (a lot of packers actually do pay attention to things like that and it is very nice on them to do so). There is a whole bunch of new and not-so-new jumpers who are completely ignorant when it comes to simple gear maintance (or cannot even make a 20 min call because their packer is really busy). Why? Because they developed a habit of paying $5-6 right after they got their A.
