quade 4 #1 April 20, 2002 HH's latest poll shows a lot of folks believe this is possible, but even if you managed to plane out and drop the verticle speed down to zero, you'd still have a heck of a lot of forward speed and you'd be landing on your belly! Can somebody explain to me how they think this might be done?quadehttp://futurecam.com

james1010 0 #4 April 20, 2002 Not sure it will ever be possible, but another corny idea might be a nice, smooth as glass, lake.
diverdriver 5 #5 April 20, 2002 If the space shuttle can come in on a 22 degree approach and still flare out to a soft touchdown I don't see why a suit couldn't be designed eventually to accomplish this. Wouldn't want to be the first to attempt the landing. But neet idea.DD
Gravitymaster 0 #6 April 20, 2002 HH's latest poll shows a lot of folks believe this is possibleAs of right now there are only 7 total votes, so I'm not sure if I'd agree with this statement yet. I doubt if anyone will ever be able to land a wing suit for the same reasons you give.Bob
quade 4 #7 April 20, 2002 Hmmm, I actually like the glass smooth lake idea a lot less than wheels. If somebody tries landing on a lake, they should first take a few flying lessons in a sea plane.http://futurecam.com
james1010 0 #8 April 20, 2002 agreed.BTW, since I'm here, I'll answer your question from another thread:It's much worse to have great weather and be stuck at work , which I take it you're at as well as I.James

diverdriver 5 #10 April 20, 2002 [smirk] I'm only hearing negativity here. No adventure. No explorer's spirit. Seeing the glass as half empty. [/big smirk]Oh sure, now you have to get technical on me.DD
TheMarshMan1 0 #11 April 20, 2002 We talked about this in another thread. I personally don't think its gonna happen- its against everything we know to land without a parachute, I don't believe too many will want to try,. Water wouldnt work too well I dont believe... Ever wad it while waterskiing? Painful...and thats not even as fast as a wingsuit would be moving forward. If it were attempted, I still think the best idea might be to find a powdery, open, and consistently sloped area of a ski resort. You would definitely have to have some frontal body protection (a sled? ) though. Loic Jean-Albert did a wingsuit flight down a mountain in Crosswind, but its hard to tell how far AGL he was...anyone know? Maybe he's onto something there...but like I said, I don't think its gonna happen anytime soon. Just my .02...."If I could be like that, I would give anything, just to live one day, in those shoes..."

diverdriver 5 #15 April 20, 2002 Course, with the increased weight of equipment for the landing you'll lose performace with today's wingsuit so it's a step back. I KNOW!!!! STAY PUFFED MARSHMELLOW MAN!!!! Aim for the white dude!!!!!!!

freeflyguy 0 #20 April 21, 2002 Tough.I think some of those guy claim they can get near 0 mph of descent, when pulling out of a dive. That would be about like flairing. But.. if they could actuallu do it, that moment of 0 mph decent is an awful small window. Problem is, it would have to be perfectly timed, slide in on your belly, that and if you are just a little late on pulling up, You will be forever Late, as in the "Late Mr. former wingsuit fly guy"j
billbooth 10 #21 April 21, 2002 I don't know about the other manufacturers, but Relative Workshop is already working on an aerodynamic, retractable landing gear pod, with a drogue for after touchdown deceleration, and a small reserve parachute, in case you get a bad spot and can't make the runway. I figure we can sell it for about the same price as a Vector, but the neat part is that we figure it will be pretty much destroyed after each use. So the customer will have to buy a new one for each jump. Wait a minute...if the pod is destroyed after each jump, the customer probably won't need a new one... Oops!... Never Mind.
