wildblue 7 #26 July 21, 2005 QuoteThis city is pretty clean compared to NY or other big cities as well. Actually, I read something the other day that ranked Chicago as the dirtiest big city. They ranked the 50 largest cities I think it was. They did note that most of Chicago's score was brought down by the 'outlying areas' -- I'd blame Munster. I'll see if I can find it if you care.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

EricaH 0 #29 July 21, 2005 I can't believe it'd be dirtiest! When talking about downtown, the only city I've seen less dirty is Austin, TX, but that hardly qualifies as having a downtown area. In Chicago teh streets are very clean, there are people who's only job is to walk around their bldg & sweep up whatever you may have just dropped. They even scrub the sidewalks. The mayor is blamed for spending too much $$ on having trees planted all over the place. I lived in lincoln park & boy's town - the people were nicer outside of lincoln park (I'm untrendy), but they weren't snobs. I grew up in the south & am use to being friendly to all around me - chicago's not too bad. While living directly north of the city is on the high side of expensive, there are lots of other areas to live (Bucktown is one) that are less. And the public transit is great enough to get you anywhere w/o needing a cab. You asked about food!! I can't believe no one's talked about this - the food rocks!! Name a type of food & you can get it, there's prob even a grocery store if you want to try cooking for yourself. My brother came to visit from FL - he said "it's no wonder you'd (meaning me) gained weight since moving here; all you people to is eat & drink, then sleep so you can eat & drink some more. During the summer the lake shore is great fun, even out of the city. If you're bored for lack of somehting to do, it's cause you're not looking - there's stuff everywhere. All this coming from a person who's moved out of the city & refuses to go there just cause it's so full. There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. ChasingBlueSky 0 #30 July 21, 2005 I'd like to see that article just to see what areas they were referring to. One thing about our Mayor is that he has dumped millions of dollars into cleaning up the downtown area. Yea, areas like Rogers Park, Harvey, Munster, and the entire factory region are not that clean - then again, why would you want to go there??_________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Hey I have a real pretty dress and shave all the time Maybe it's my breath or lack of breasts I'm not saying there aren't friendly people there but as a population in a whole I've found that people down in Dallas, as well as other places I've lived (Salt Lake City Ut, Scottsdale AZ, Boulder CO) are much more friendly and are more willing to talk to a stranger... ??? have you lived anywhere besides Chi Town??? ***Glory Favors the Bold***
hippydiver 0 #34 July 21, 2005 Alright, so, who can tell me some decent areas in or around town to live in? suburbs too (we're untrendy too). We'll need a 3br house or the like. Being musicians we have a hard time with apartments and the dogs need a yard. I'm thinking anywhere up to $1600/month max. Diversgodown 0 #35 July 21, 2005 I'm not sure how far out you want to go but Northwest sub, are good Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, Palatine. Those are about 1/2 hr. away with No traffic. I think there are parts of Rosemont that are nice but not to sure on that maybe someone else could tell you... I'm more familiar with the areas I mentioned. and for that price you could get a very large house.... I have a friend that owns a three flat I think it's down by Wrigleyville I'll try getting a hold of him and let you know what I find out.... ***Glory Favors the Bold***
eeneR 3 #36 July 21, 2005 Wriglyville = no yard. You have a lot of options in the burbs. If you are in the city, at times bands will cause issues as the houses are very close together. Some of the burbs will set noise restrictions. The further out of the city you go, bigger property, less problems with noise complaints I am in the Westerb burbs right now, but Naperville is kind of snobby, but I had a hard time finding a place that would take 2 dogs apartment wise. Normally if you go un-incorporated you can find some nice property for not too bad of price...She is not a "Dumb Blonde" - She is a "Light-Haired Detour Off The Information Superhighway." eeneR TF#72, FB#4130, Incauto
RfukfreeflyingW 0 #37 July 21, 2005 I cant believe that no one mentioned that just about every city has a festival/taste all through out the summer. mhmm ribfest... which is huge on local bands, and bands from the 80's that no one cares about anymore and as far as living goes, to me western suburbs are the way to go. Lombard/Villa park isnt too expensive of a place to live, with train stations right there to take you into the city, and its not too bad to drive around in.---- -God, you are the perfect amount of dumb... Diversgodown 0 #38 July 21, 2005 True I didn't think about the no yard thing!!! Plus naperville is a little far from Chicago but some crazy people make the drive. I think Arlington Heights would be a good bet easy access to 90 and 53. The areas nice, the yards are large and good party places around the area too. I lived off Golf and Arlington Heights RD. AndyMan 7 #39 July 21, 2005 It's funny you mentioned the festivals. Craichead and I live in a condo literally accross the street from St. Pats Church. Every year they host their Worlds Largest Block Party. We literally live 50 feet away. Despite living in the area for close to 5 years... I've never gone. Why waste a good day of skydiving on some lame over-produced parking lot drunk-fest with crappy bands? Echo similar thoughts for Taste Of Chicago, too. I will admit to having gone there once, though - it was lunchtime and it was a "work outting". Chicago has a lot of great things going for it, fantastic restaurants, night clubs, sports... You name it. Lots of things to do withouth worrying about crime. The streets are clean and safe. However, I could REALLY do without all of the mega-"festivals". Real estate is affordable because it hasn't seen the boom of the east and west coast, but it's still appreciating at a high enough rate so that property owners will make money.__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. Dearie, some of us see this as a tremendous advantage If I walk out my front door I'm playing in the Park District or even the lake within two minutes. And I don't have to mow or shovel anything! hippydiver 0 #41 July 21, 2005 I see a lot of people mentioning the western suburbs and when looking for houses to rent they look good to me. Are most the western suburbs (naperville, villa park, lombard, aurora, etc) connected to the city by train? Are the trains and transit system worth using? I would assume so. Here in Houston we have no mass-transit (one of the reasons we want out), and I'd definitely use it in Chicago if it meant not sitting in traffic jams every morning. So, are the burbs mostly connected to the city? Thanks everybody---------- gravity rat formula 109 Team Gonzo and Team Jamaican Me Crazy no bullshit, let's just fly, be safe, and have fun.
