Was my raise this year. Is that par, subpar? Let's see what others got or normally get.

I got 1% one year and told my boss to slap me instead.

Most I've gotten is 6% and that was an extremely busy year.

I was given a 5% raise as a promotion. In the same breath, they took away 5% of my short-term incentive bonus (to get everyone to the same level). Congratulations Rebecca! Oh wait...

Better than nothing...

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

I think with larger companies 3% is about average unless there is a promotion involved.

I'm in a super large international company. So I'm thinking it's about right. :S

Dude be happy you got a raise. I worked for a startup from the summer of '01 until last November and while I was appropriately paid for my profession (software developer) I never got one single raise in my 4 years at this company.

Last year 3%, this year 0%, but hey "we didn't take your bonus away, of course we have decided you will only get 50% of it." :S

Unfortunately I'm trying to get everything together to start plans to buy a house, so finding a new job right now is not a good idea.

Edit to add....this was not based on my performance this was company wide they were trying to save money. Performance wise I got 100% of my 50%.

When I was in management, 5% was reserved for only the best employees and that meant giving someone else only 1%. (We only had so much room in the budget.) I can't remember the last time I saw a 5% raise unless a promotion was involved. Most managers would prefer to do 3% across the board instead- unless one person is really deserving and another is not. In my field, the only way to get more money is to take a job with the competition! (Or accept the job, give notice and see if your current employer is willing to make it worth your while to stay!)

5% is cost of living

that's incorrect. It's usually around 3 +-.5% a yr
mine was 4% last yr and that was on the high end...

If I'm getting raises, I'd hope for it to be the same as cost of living.. if not more.. if more I wouldn't complain.
Depending on the salary, raises are necessary. I'm more of a believer in bonuses... even though they get taxed differently

.. but then again i work for a non profit :S:ph34r:

The company I am with is doing really well but is not giving any raises. In fact, rumors are that salary cuts will start happening next year.

Now-a-days, more bucks come from your own independent diligence. In other words, start a financially lucrative idea and go with it.

I hate that.. the 'workers' salary goes down but the CEO's goes up, whether or not the company was profitable or not! Seriously.. If you took that extra 200k the CEO is making you could give 50 employee's 4k more a yr.. and that 4k matters more to them than that extra 200k to the CEO >:(

I'm having a blonde moment...I dunno how to figure out my % raise. I just know how much more per paycheck i make.

Sunshine,

Example: Last year you made 20k. This year you make 25k. Take the difference (5k) and divide by last years salary. In this case 5 divided by 20 = 25% raise.

I used to work for a financial institution and was told we we're all one big family. A family that would share its fortunes and it's misery equally amongst it's members. Translation: if you're not on the board of directors, you're screwed. I also walked away, started a business for myself and never looked back. Damn, the best decision I ever made.
