Do you jump with low-timers?

Recommended Posts

Although I'm a newbie at freeflying (and jumping on my own and paying for coach jumps), I've still made time to jump with some fresh A's to help them with their RW skills. I guess I feel lucky that I started jumping at a small dropzone in the early 90's, because it was a given that experienced jumpers would mentor the lowtimers. That was the way to increase the number of competent divers, and that led to more satisifying jumps for everyone.

At big turbine DZ's now days, there are so many good jumpers already that I don't think many experienced jumpers feel the need to help improve the overall quality of the dropzone's skydiver pool.

I LOVE to jump with newer jumpers and pass along what I know. I try to do my best at making the effort to do so, but I know sometimes I do get caught up in working on my own skills, so I won't pretend that I am perfect, but I try. Still, one of my favorite things to do is jump with newer jumpers and teach.

I can't stand Sky Gods, and will never become one!!!
I jump with anyone. New A license or old timer, I jump with anyone I can. I tend to jump with newer jumpers, and that's cool with me since my RW skills can always use work!! Some of the most entertaining jumps are ones that get funneled from launch to break off!!!

I never really thought about this. I jump with who ever wants to at the time. I don't ask, nor care what the number of jumps someone has is.

My question for the groups is: how often do you ask how many jumps someone has? Thats a question I just don't ask.

I hope you gets lots of experienced people to jump with you then! :)

Hehe, me too. The problem I'm already running into is that my tiny little DZ is mostly RW, which is fun, but I have my eye set on FF, so there'll be a lot of solo experimentation, I suspect :)

There's a time to jump with low timers and a time to work on your own skills and jump with people at your level or better than you. Its all about balance. Its OK to be a little selfish with your jump tickets, (as in work on improving your own skills) but there should also be room to give a little back to the sport.

When it comes to Freeflying i always ask how many freefly jumps they have.

Because I suck and don’t want someone else who sucks as bad as I do. If I fuck up I want them to be able to get out of my way. Until I can depend on my skill to avoid other people I will always jump with people who can avoid me. :)

I'm usually the "low-timer," but I've found lots of very experienced folks willing to jump with me, and I love to jump with them to help improve my skills. That said, I did my first "rescue a newbie from another solo" routine last week, grabbing a newly-minted A license holder and going on a two-way with him. He was so grateful that I'd asked, and I made a point of suggesting some other folks at the DZ who are much more experienced than me who would be willing to jump with him.

As I get to know students, too, I make a point of saying "let's jump together when you get your license." I know that meant a lot to me when I was a student, knowing that there would be people to jump with once I was out in the big bad world without an instructor.

narrow minded on my part..... I jump at a small dropzone where max load is 6, with usually 2-3 going low..... so its usually who evers left tries something together unless there is a specific goal of a jumper...

i dig jumping with newbies. Helping people learn and giving back to the sport is what i'm about. It's why i'm in the proces of trying to get a JM rating and a coach rating. until then i'll jump with low timers as much as possible.

As often as possible. I suck but I can often teach people SOMETHING and more often than not they help me practice things too. It's a pretty good feeling watching people progress too. :)

Ditto. Honestly, I feel as though my flying has improved 10 fold from jumping with lowtimers because I'm focused on them and adjust my fall rate to stay with them. I love the big grin when they have that "ah ha" moment from a small tip I shared.

I do, but lately I find I really have to make time for it. Often I'm at the DZ filling in for a missing person on a 4-way team, or committed to 6 jumps with a 20 way, or doing something like the PPP. It's becoming more and more rare that I just find myself with no commitements at the DZ. The one time every year I try to _make_ time is at Rantoul, where I organize for low-time jumpers pretty exclusively.
