fallingchip 0 #1 July 7, 2005 When I arrived at work yesterday my first (and last) 911 call I responded to was for a stray dog in someones yard. When I arrived I didn't see any dogs. I got out of my patrol car, walked up to the old ladies door and...BAM....the dog came out from under the porch and attacked me. I have 11 tears and puncture wounds on both my hands. The dog was captured by animal control about an hour later and it appears the damn thing is rabid. The attack was painful but the E.R. vist was 100 times worse. Much needed vibes would be so nice.... ______________________________________________ "A radical man is a man with both feet firmly planted in the air." -Franklin Delano Roosevelt
wmw999 2,444 #2 July 7, 2005 Many vibes. I hope the "rabid" report ends up being wrong. But either way, the shots are a cheap preventive given the alternative. fallingchip 0 #3 July 7, 2005 They started me on the rabies shots already...so painful. Much thanks...______________________________________________ "A radical man is a man with both feet firmly planted in the air." -Franklin Delano Roosevelt
wmw999 2,444 #4 July 7, 2005 My brother was bitten by a dog at a beach when we lived in Brazil (where rabies control wasn't as good at the time). He's deathly afraid of shots (still is), and waited a day before telling my mom. It took him that long to decide that possibly dying was, in fact, worse than getting the shots. All anyone will say is that "its about 100 shots in the stomach and its painful." Why so many? And why the pain? Do they put the needle in the bone? Into nerves? Is it a big needle? Long? Wide? Is it the medication that stings going in? Again. Glad you are alive and they were able to catch the animal to make the diagnosis. The report from Animal Control isn't back, but their "opinion" was almost immediate that she was rabid so my Captian requested I started the shots right away. The shots are a cycle over a period of several days. On Wednesday(day of bites) I received two shots of immunoglobulin in the palm of my right hand at one wound, one shot of immunoglobulin in a wound on the left hand, and one shot of immunoglobulin in each thigh. I then got one shot of rabies vacine in my right arm. I went back for one shot today in my left arm and will get one shot in the arm on July 13 and on the 20th. My final shot will be on Aug 3rd. The pain was the shots in the hands due to the thickness of the immunoglobulin. As far as the size of the needles...there all big to me...
