peacefuljeffrey 0 #1 July 3, 2005 What do you do to keep the ring from snagging or otherwise getting abused and hurting like hell? Do you slap a big band-aid on it any time you jump? Mine is only two weeks old, though it's healing pretty nicely. (The only time it has ever hurt is when the "crusties" that form at the edge sorta scab over and fuse the ring to the wound so it won't rotate through freely. OUCH! Can't wait til I'm past that!) I have not yet skydived with the ring in, and I want to know what the experiences of others who have pierced nipples have taught them about keeping it safe while skydiving. Thanks for your help. Have a safe and happy Independence Day! Blue skies, -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" slotperfect 7 #2 July 3, 2005 I had a male AFF student who had two of them . . . he told me of them when I asked the jewelry question. I had him take them out. This was right after the blurb in the incident reports of Parachutist. I have a friend who has both of his pierced so there must be a way to keep them from getting irritated. Surely someone here will pipe up.Arrive Safely John

redramdriver 0 #4 July 3, 2005 I have 1 ring. It has gotten pulled a little from my chest strap from time to time. I have never put anything over it, but it has long since been healed up. The little crusties as you put it, you should wash them dailing and move and/or rotate the ring and keep the movement as free as you can. Don't go to long without a complete cleaning of them. You should do fine with the bandaid, or better yet, some of the "paper" tape type stuf that is cheap, comes off easily, and doesn't leave adheasive on you as much. It may even stay put better then the Band-Aid. Just try what you feel is best. Remeber, it only hurts when your chest strap pulls it, or if you are pulling it !!! BluesSo, you bring your beer? lummy 4 #5 July 3, 2005 I've never had any problems with mine either. If I'm not wearing a jumpsuit, then yeah, I will put a bandaid over it just in case but otherwise jump like it's not there.I promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. Don't go to long without a complete cleaning of them. Hey, I call them crusties only because that's what they were called by others before I even got the piercing done! Don't make fun! LOL! Oh, no worries, I do two or three regular cleanings of the thing, using Bactine and rotating it and removing "crusties" and such. It feels very healthy and is not red, swollen, irritated, or anything, but it still does discharge some pus-like stuff now and then, mostly in the morning when I get up and clean it. I take that as a normal sign (after all, that is just the non-dried-up form of the "crusties" is, and I was told to expect crusties) and I know what else to be looking for (pain, redness) as signs of infection. Thanks, folks. Looks like I'll use either large square band-aids or maybe gaffer's tape. Blue skies, -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" WatchYourStep 0 #10 July 4, 2005 God that would hurt. I've got both of mine pierced and never have had a problem. I use to be big into paintballing and went the day after I got them pierced. I got shot twice in the same nipple that day. That hurt. "You start off your skydiving career with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. missg8tordivr 0 #11 July 5, 2005 Never had a problem with mine. I usually wear a sports bra when I jump, so that gives a little protection.*** F LORIDA!
Nightingale 0 #12 July 5, 2005 salt water soaks work well to get rid of the crusties. Sea salt or magnesium salts work well, just put some in a shot glass with hot water and put the glass over the piercing. Stings like heck for a minute, but helps a lot, in my experience. Or, just make cleaning the piercing the last thing you do before you finish your shower (although most piercers say the salt soaks are good for it too...I've had 16 piercings total, and salt soaks have helped the most healing-wise, but everyone is different.). If you accidentally rotate a crusty through the hole, it tears at the inside of the piercing and that can make it take longer to heal and increase the risk of infection. As tempting as it can be, be careful not to clean it too much. Every time you rotate the ring, you irritate the inside of the piercing as it's beginning to heal, and you can prolong healing that way. A piercing is an open wound, and it's best not to handle it any more than necessary. As for making it snag proof while skydiving, try one of those tight, slick textured sports shirts from underarmour or something like that. If the shirt is snug, it will hold the piercing against your body, decreasing the chances of a snag. Band-aids can irritate the skin if you use them too often in the same place, but they do work well as a temporary fix (just don't use the fabric ones with the super-strong adhesive, because that hurts like hell if it accidentally sticks to the piercing), especially if you put them vertically, as the chest strap will be sliding up.
