heidihagen 0 #80 June 28, 2005 QuoteNext thing I knew I was graduating AFF. ... not exactly my story, but i can dream here's mine: i had plans to make oneeee. ......then another because the first was soooo fun. went into savings and signed up for the entire course that week. i keep tryinggg to get my my friends to make one jump in hopes that will get em hooked... but these are also the same ones that kept backing out on the group rate in college (i finally went alone years later)... doubt it will happen but i'm losing my whuffos ahhhh wellll, i'm having fun with my skyfriends and can't wait to get my license so we can play!!!also: i was talking about this with another student.... what happens to the 30 jump jumpers? you know, the jumpers that get their license (or came close), made a few jumps and disappeared. the stress of buying gear? cost of rentals? or or do they freak out once they don't have a coach right there on every jump? does it get boring or something? or did they just quit logging onto dz.com and their info is way outdated? i've been reading old threads fill me in.i didn't lose my mind, i sold it on ebay. .:need a container to fit 5'4", 110 lb. cypres ready & able to fit a 170 main (or slightly smaller):.[/ce
hexadecimal 0 #81 June 28, 2005 Always wanted to go... Last year, a friend from work told me that he had recently gone and loved it. He also said that he was going immediately for his second tandem so that he could go through the AFP. When he went for his second tandem, I went with and jumped. Now I'm in the AFP, and he keeps making excuses

Clite 0 #84 June 29, 2005 I grew up watching my dad jump at the DZ nearly every weekend and seeing all the fun he had. I knew I would be jumping someday. On my first jump (AFF level 1) I was very nervous, until I looked over and saw my Dad smiling. I knew everything would be alright. Passed my first jump with my dad as one of the jumpmaster. Haven't been able to shake the desire yet.

CanuckInUSA 0 #87 June 29, 2005 Like most people I had always wanted to try it, but never really got around to it. Then some volleyball friends had scheduled a day to go do some tandems and I told them I was game. Well the rest is history. I was the only one from my volleyball group that went back the next weekend for my AFF lessons. Of course I was already a licensed pilot at the time, I was used to being in the air and I told myself that my 1st skydive was just way too cool not to try again. That was 3 years (minus 2 weeks), 1085 skydives and 72 BASE jumps ago. My life will never be the same and I can't see myself going back to being a whuffo again. Skydiving changed my life both in a good as well as a bad way. But I can't go back ... who would choose such a life ... I would. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
mdrejhon 8 #88 June 29, 2005 Hey, how did this old thread get up to the top... I guess it "corked up" of a sudden. Okay...Lessee...For myself...It was Skyflyer Xtreme at Canada's Wonderland in 1996 that made me want to try skydiving someday, and I did my first tandem in 1997. I had my next tandem in 2002 and it still stuck in my mind. Then for my 31st birthday, I decided that I could afford a skydiving course (AFF style). I had mixed feelings about the cost but I told myself I would regret it less if I took it. So here I am. I did have an interest in heights (tree climbing, high diving board, flying in a plane as passenger, rollercoasters) and I had enjoyed the skydiving movies that came out in the mid-90's too as well, but the definitive turning point was Canada's Wonderland "Skyflyer Xtreme", a freefall type of a ride. NWFlyer 2 #91 June 29, 2005 insert the usual "always wanted to do it" story here. Found myself in August 2004 having lost a lot of weight (thus being healthy and fit and light enough to do it) and having just returned from a weekend in Vancouver playing adrenaline junkie with a power boat. A friend said "You ever tried skydiving or bungee jumping?" I said bungee didn't really appeal but I'd always wanted to skydive. That was a Monday. I got the last spot in the static line FJC that Saturday. The rest, as they say, is history."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

They chickened out and I ended up forgetting about it. Eighteen months later, I've just moved to Australia. I've been in Sydney two days and walk past a shop called "Sydney Skydivers". It's a Sunday afternoon so the shop is closed. I walk into the internet café next door and immediately go to their website. I take a chance on calling them after hours, the owner answers, I do the first jump course the next day, and AFF 1 & 2 the day after. I was really scared for the first few jumps, and with dodgy weather and a busy tandem operation, I found myself on the ground more often than not. I promised myself I wouldn't quit before I finished my AFF. Much to my surpise on Stage 7 I found myself grinning like an idiot in freefall, and haven't looked back since! 150 jumps in the first year. On target for 300 in my second year. Life is good .
