hollyhjb 0 #1 June 26, 2005 I need to know the area (in square feet) of a circle with a circumference of 1/3 mile."I reject your reality and substitute my own" ~Adam Savage
indyz 1 #2 June 26, 2005 246,499.3 square feet. I think. Divide 1/3 by pi to get diamter ( 0.106103385 miles). Divide by 2 to get radius (0.053051693). pi * r^2 = area ( 0.008841949 square miles). convert from square miles to square feet (one statute mile is 5,280 feet, so 27,878,400 square feet per square mile gives 246,499.3 square feet). Does that sound right to everybody? And Kallend better not give me any shit about ignoring significant figures.

hollyhjb 0 #4 June 26, 2005 Looks good to me. I'll double check after I get some sleep."I reject your reality and substitute my own" ~Adam Savage
dbattman 0 #5 June 27, 2005 I'm getting: 3.14159*(5280/6)^2= 2,432,847.3 ft^2 The other answers do not have the formula written correctly.
Darshiva8 0 #6 June 27, 2005 No, the earlier posts are correct. It's 246,199 ft^2. Since it's starting with a circumference of 1/3 miles which is 1760ft. The equation for circumference is C=2r*pi. Solve for radius, r. r=C/(2*pi). And use this in the equation for area: A=pi*r^2, which is with the r substitution: A=pi*(C/(2*pi))^2 ************** For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return. ~Leonardo da Vinci~
dbattman 0 #7 June 27, 2005 Whoops- I misread the original post. I thought it said the D was 1/3 mile, not a C of 1/3 mile. I though that looked like a strange discrepency- a full order fo magnitude off. My bad.
