Drinking after donating blood?

Recommended Posts

Beth, please be careful and read the following information about post donation smoking and drinking:

Can I smoke after giving blood?

Smoking after blood donation is not a good idea, at least for the first several hours. Smoking causes your blood vessels to dilate, and in combination with the effect of blood donation, can increase your risk of getting seriously dizzy or even faint.

Can I drink alcohol after giving blood?

Alcohol has two effects that may be problematic for donors. The first is that alcohol tends to dilate your blood vessels, and this can put you at increased risk for dizziness or fainting after your donation. Second, alcohol tends to dehydrate you, and after you donate, you need MORE fluid, not less! So, it is really a good idea to avoid alcoholic beverages for at least the first several hours after donation, preferably for at least 12 hours.

I'm on drink number one and I don't have to drive. How many will it take for me to get drunk?

I agree with the safety nazi's. BE CAREFUL!!!
once after I gave blood I drove to the dz ( was still AFF) we did two jumps then I drove home (3.5 hours trip --one way) and started drinking to celebrate. I woke up and we started playing volley ball...

needless to say I felt like I died that day.
I forgot that I had given APHRESIS just two days prior. I was dehydrated and it felt like hell took over my body.

I'm not saying youre not aloowed to drink but just be careful in the quanties and exertion levels[:/]

A certain denizen of dropzone.com used to give blood in college, then do tequila shooters and play wallyball with friends in the same state. Great fun. He's a real JACKASS

that's the best time to drink. one time i gave blood in high school and it only took 2 beers to get me drunk vs. 4 or 5. but hey i was 17 at the time it seemed like a good idea. it makes for a cheap evening of drinking. just don't drive anywhere. or run in the snow in your boxers. shrinkage you know.

Wow- I remember donating blood in Paris many years ago and they gave me a beer and a sandwich when I was done instead of the usual juice and cookies! I'll bet in Ireland they give their donors Guiness! But seriously, everything in moderation!

Right along with the rest of the safety posts- be careful!! I used to donate plasma regulalrly in college and being from a college with a small drinking problem, I would regularly go out and get wasted the night after. I definitely had a HORRIBLE hangover 100% of the time I did this and I would get wasted very very quickly, but sometimes it is really hard to learn a lesson... :S

What can I say- I had to be "economical" with the $$ I had earned from donating a a cheap night at the bar was the way to do it! :P
Blue skies and SAFE landings!
