skymama 37 #1 June 13, 2005 I keep getting a message that my Windows Virtural Memory is low (I have Windows XP). I click "OK" on the box that says it is going to increase the size of the memory. It used to only happen when more than 1 person was logged into the computer, but yesterday it did it when I was the only one logged in. RfukfreeflyingW 0 #2 June 13, 2005 yeah see, ur missing a widget doohiggy... dont fear though, those are easily installed, what u do is slide ur computer out to an open area, then take a baseball bat, and hit it at a 45 degree angle.. and I do mean hit it, not one of these "ooh im hitting it, but dont really wanna hit it" hit do that 3 times, not 2 and definatly not 4! just 3... then restart your computer... if that doesnt work, just burn it and buy a new one...---- -God, you are the perfect amount of dumb... Go to Control Panel 3. Open the folder called "System". 4. Click the Tab that says "Advanced" 5. Then under "Performance" click settings. 6. Then click the Tab that says "Advanced 7. Mostly_Harmless 0 #5 June 13, 2005 Virtual memory is an imaginary memory area supported by some operating systems (for example, Windows but not DOS) in conjunction with the hardware. You can think of virtual memory as an alternate set of memory addresses. Programs use these virtual addresses rather than real addresses to store instructions and data. When the program is actually executed, the virtual addresses are converted into real memory addresses. The purpose of virtual memory is to enlarge the address space, the set of addresses a program can utilize. For example, virtual memory might contain twice as many addresses as main memory. A program using all of virtual memory, therefore, would not be able to fit in main memory all at once. Nevertheless, the computer could execute such a program by copying into main memory those portions of the program needed at any given point during execution. 248Mb seems pretty low. I would increase it too about 400-500 MB. If you still get the same error then increase that number by 100MB until the problem stops. Remster 30 #6 June 13, 2005 243 MB????? Are you sure ! Thats the number of the Microsoft Beast! 243... yikes... Thats bad Andrea... I hope you have a backup.... I am finding XP is really weird with its virtual memory... My lappy has been giving me an error on it for a few months now, and, honestly, I havent noticed any issues... but have someone look at it. minobu 0 #7 June 13, 2005 Increasing your physical memory would also help with this problem and help with the performance of your computer as well. If you are consistently using up your virtual memory I would imagine performance is also suffering. Accessing your hard drive for memory is extremely slow when compared with having enough RAM. Memory these days is still relatively cheap and its pretty easy to install and can make a HUGE difference in the speed of your computer ecspecially when dealing with XP.
