ffejdraga 0 #3 May 21, 2005 When i was there a few years ago, some of the highlights are: Siena. Nice little town with medieval walls....the city of siena is just normal, Italian city....but inside the medieval walls is awesome, like stepping back in time 700 years. lots of old buildings, churches and other stuff. Very cool. Venice Very cool, but pretty expensive. What can you say, Ahhhhhhh Venice. Cinque Terre This was my avorite place in Italy, definitely go if you can....it means "five lands(or towns)" and there are 5 little seaside towns pushed up against the mountains. You get to the first town via train, then you hike up a little bit into the mountains, and walk over and then down to the next one. Repeat untill you have seen all the towns. The hike is beautiful, and not hardcore at all. I think the longest distance from one town to the next is just over a mile, and the rest are less than one mile. (don't quote me on that....) It is an amzing place, the trails look down to the crystal blue Mediterrean sea, itis phenomenal. It is the NW coast of Italy, on the way to France, close to Florence and Pisa. HERE are some pics and info about it for you. Also, if you are going to be in Florence for any bit of time, right near the Duomo, down one of the side streets is a gelato place called Vivoli. This is hands down the best gelato place there is in Italy. (Yes, I have tried almost all of them...). Go there, enjoy some great Italian gelato. You won't want to eat ice cream after that, you will be a gelato SNOB!! other places I have been there are: Rome, Genoa, Pisa, and Padua. All good, with their own merits, but as you are on a shorter schedule, try Siena and Cinque Terre...off the beaten path so to speak. Have a great trip! Casie 0 #5 May 21, 2005 I was in Italy a few years back. ROME must sees: The Colosseum (Roman Forum) - my favorite of all. The Catacombs - very intriguing and a little spooky The Spanish Steps The Trevi Fountain - you must throw a coin in for your future return! *any little pizzeria you go to, will be awesome *try not to wear noticable jewelry as the gypies are bad in Rome *perhaps bring a hidden money flap and some summer clothes. I went in June - extremely moggy during the day and AWESOME at night. ORVIETO - it's between Rome and Florence A gorgeous little midevil town on top of a mountain. Tons of little shops and restaurants. VENICE must dos: I luved the gondola ride - even if that's all you do there. kjarv 0 #6 May 23, 2005 Hi there, I've been livin' in Naples for the past couple years. Make time for Arezzo (Skydive Tortuga) if you can. If you're staying in Florence, Arezzo is a short and inexpensive train ride away. The DZ is relaxed, and the view at 15,000ft is spectacular, and definately not your 'everyday' tourist experience If you don't have a hotel yet, get setup to stay in Hotel Laggiato Dei Serviti--- it's a really old converted Monestary, stone floors, awesome place--doesn't look like a hotel, and it's only a block away from 'David' and a short walk to the main Piazza. Italian coast is disappointing-- beaches are crowded and they CHARGE Be sure to try Mozzarela di Bufala! Enjoy the Chianti from Tuscany as well. enjoy your trip.
