How much do you spend on...?

Recommended Posts

Five questions...

I'm trying to dispel the notion that outdoorsy types can't appreciate the beauty of high quality shoes, the elegance of a great haircut, the uniqueness of a locally made artsy dress and the softness of high thread-count bedding.

Are we just too cheap and do we rather spend money on the activities we love? Are we just too tired when we get home from a long day of adrenaline and exercise?

Thanks,

Jaap

I have $20 shoes and $600 shoes. Same goes for clothing. I don't care much about the thread count, but do care about feeling comfortable in bed. And yes, I have been known to frequent art galleries...

edited: I spend a fortune on my hair. I have a Scottish groundskeeper from St Andrews clip them one by one. Chicks dig it:|

I'm an "outdoorsy type" who virtually never wears shoes (and when I do, they're flip-flops, and when I skydive, I'm barefoot). I deplore the notion of shoes being expensive. They should be minimal. They should not be considered an extension of the self, or a definer of the self. If you are paying for the name of the maker of the shoe, then you are a fool.

If you require certain kinds of linen in order to be able to sleep comfortably, then you are a prickly, fussy person who is bound to just annoy the shit out of anyone you try to spend time with. Hard-to-please people are also hard-up for pleasing those they are with. It goes both ways. A person who can't sleep on ordinary linen is just not versatile. What the hell would happen to such a person if their car broke down on a long trip and they had to spend the night in a motel? They'd be sleep deprived the next day when they got the car repaired?

It's one thing to enjoy "the finer things" and it's quite another to be unable to function without them.

A "great haircut"? Give me a break. This is snobbery at its worst, this thread is. Who gives a fuck about it?! Is that what you see in people? The apparent price of their haircut?! OMFG. :S

Ever heard of "conspicuous consumption"? It's the kind of spending that means you waste money on bullshit things like designer shoes and expensive haircuts, when others go without.

It's part of what's wrong with the world, in my view.

Hey Jeffrey,

good points.

For the record, I've slept comfortably on floors on many occasions. I've seen haircuts done for 5 bucks with nothing but a clipper that looked great! I've spend some of my best times with homeless people who's beards hadn't been trimmed in a year and whose clothing came from the local trash facility.

If my post made it seem as if I believe the things in my poll determine the quality of a person, then please let the moderator remove it.

I'm glad we agree.

No, and I apologize if this thread made it seem that way.

Nonetheless, I would assume that most people have a certain sense towards aesthetics. Everybody, to some degree or another.

I hadn't until now. Through Google that actually turned up some good reads. Thanks!

It this statement was coming from some poor sweatshop boedha buddy from a tiny sweatshop in the middle of India, maybe I'd agree. Coming from a skydiver I'm not sure if such a thing makes sense. Who are we to judge somebody that spends money on expensive products when at the same time we are burning massive amounts of jet-fuel for 20 bucks a jump?

I'll use the same format...
Shoes: avg. $25, but never above $60. Comfort counts, but don't give a s**t about the brand.
Haircut: My wife does it for free, only when I absolutely have to have it... :D
Clothing: What is a suit? :P Khakis $30, jeans avg. $25, some shirts $15 with $5 ties (need them for work:S), t-shirts $5-$15.
Bed sheets: don't have a clue about thread count. Couldn't care less -- can sleep on a bare floor.:D
Art: Sometimes, but absolutely no "modern arts".

If one buys for no other reason that the label attached to the item so he/can flaunt it, I would tend to agree. But I tend to buy, regardless of the price, what makes me feel good, being physically or "spiritually". I bought a pair of shoes for $500 17 years ago, and I still love wearing them. Regardless of the brand (most people have probably never heard of it anyway).

I might have reacted with undue harshness to the idea of this thread because I was reading into it stuff that wasn't necessarily contained therein. I apologize. I didn't mean to be judgmental of those who have posted here. I do continue to feel the way I indicated, if and when people are soooo attached to status symbols and needlessly expensive things.

Anyway, goodnight all. :)

Shoes - less than 100 usually - I wear sneakers, hiking boots, and at work it's steel-toe boots paid for by the company. (But they go for well over 100 bones, I insist on the best.)

Haircuts - Around 30-40 bucks. 3-4 haircuts a year, max.

Sheets? As long as they're reasonably clean, I'm cool.

Art Galleries? What are they?

I guess I blew the curve?

shoes: usually sneakers, usually $60 - $90 and they generally last a year as my 'good' shoes, then they get demoted to lawn mowing and yardwork shoes, then trash. i have a pair of sandals i bought a couple of years ago, and a pair of hikers for winter. and my chucks, but they come uner the skydiving equipment category.

haircuts: haven't had one in over a year, but probably need a trim. it'll probably be $25 - $40 or so.

sheets: i like the feel of high thread count stuff, but won't pay the ridiculous prices of some of them. i have some fuzzy sheets for winter. great for cold nights

art museums: it would really depend. i don't go out of my way to find them.

I'd like to help you dispel the notion that I don't appreciate the beauty of high quality shoes, but I don't. The elegance of a great haircut? I honestly have no need for it. High thread count bedding? Yeah, I sure like it, but what's the point of bedding that's softer than my clothing?

Am I just too cheap? You're goddamned right I am. I get 10 dollar haircuts. I'm happy that my wife hasn't gotten me any new pairs of shoes in the last year - I simply don't need them. I've got enough.

What is amazing it what people don't understand. I've never spent more than $250.00 on a suit. I wear cheap suits. I'm not the, "Oooh. Armani. And only $3,000.00?" Instead, I spend $189.99 on a cheap ass suit, and then spend 60 bucks getting it tailored. What happens? That cheap ass suit looks like a 2,000.00 suit.

The bookkeeper where I worked in LA spent 900 dollars on a purse a couple of years ago. Yes, 900 dollars on a purse. Not one with snaps, either. Fabric and wooden handles. A purse. 900 dollars. Ahem, yes, 900 dollars on a purse. A fucking 900 dollar purse. And she bragged about it because of the label.

I am, at the very least, glad to know that my wife is coming around to this. I notice that most people with kids don't worry so much about the labels that they wear. Usually, the older a person gets, the more they realize that a 300 dollar haircut is a waste. That the 200 dollar dinner I could have tonight will merely be a 200 dollar shit tomorrow.

Did I mention the 900 dollar purse the bookkeeper where I used to work purchased?

I have a few good shoes that I spent less than $150.00 on, but my closet is full of $3.00 flip flops.
Hair cuts usually around $35. I finally found someone who does a really good job, but I would never spend $ 100-200 like most people I work with. I wear suits to work but when I am not at work its shorts or jeans and t-shirts.

Now my little sister on the other hand - she thinks she is Carrie Bradshaw. The girl has more $400.00 shoes than anyone I know. She even spent $600.00 on a pair recently to wear to her graduation at UT. She said they were on sale from $2000.00. Yes I said graduation - I was lucky If I got to eat in college!

I can't believe we are from the same family! :)

Don't apologize for shit! I spend my money any damn way I wish. My car breaks down and I see a Motel 6 and a Hilton side by side. I'm fucking at the Hilton on 600+ thread count sheets baby!!! Then I'll call a friend to fly down, pick up my ass and we will burn 50 bucks an hour of fuel to get my ass home!!

Get some!

Heck, I'm a girl, and I'm pretty much at the low end except for the culture stuff. I do like my art, and concerts, and stuff like that.

I like cotton sheets, but I like them with a little body, which means a lower thread count of nice thick threads. I just don't like them all flimsy and stick-to-your-back feeling.

I've never spent $100 on a single pair of shoes, except for once for my son (and he paid half of the cost).

I've spent $300-400 on a suit once. I laughed the other day when my manager told the story about a friend standing in line to spend $900 on a purse. I do like leather, though, so it's generally somewhere between $50 and $150. Then it gets used until it's old and decrepit.

And yup, haircuts are in the $30 range. With tip.

That way there's more money to spend on other stuff, or simply to save so that I don't have to worry. And that way there's less stuff that I have to worry about, and take care of, etc.

Ditto on most of these, except the sheets, but I sleep well in most anything except silk or flannel sheets.

I get my shoes and jeans from outlet stores, and just had a $12.95 haircut yesterday at Head Start...

I like the nicer things but can go cheapo too.

There's a place I know that I really like to go for a haircut if I'm in that town, but it's still cheap ($30 for a haircut, hot foam straight-razor shave, shampoo, condition, and style). When that's not convenient, I'm either paying $15 at a franchise place or having someone at the DZ clip it for free.

Shoes - I've got a pair that was like $180, another that was $130 (that I've been wearing routinely for 7+ years), and everything else is under $50.

Sheets - Flannel in the winter, 600 thread count now, I prefer to be comfy when I'm resting.

Art - I like the performing arts a little more than still art, but do find occasion to walk through the odd gallery and would like to own more than I do. I've never been to an art museum.
