brierebecca 0 #1 June 2, 2005 So I gave up caffiene a week ago after 15+ years of drinking 3 cokes (or more) a day. I'm past the headaches and crankiness, and I'm not really craving it much anymore. However, I've noticed a SERIOUS increase in my appetite. Any of you health gurus out there know why this is so? I was thinking it was because a can of coke has like 30 grams of carbs in it, and I'm just craving the carbs now, but that's just a theory... Any ideas?"Ive seen you hump air, hump the floor of the plane, and hump legs. You now have a new nickname: "Black Humper of Death"--yardhippie

wmw999 2,589 #3 June 2, 2005 Dunno. I gave it up a little over a year ago (although I started drinking coffee again about 2 months ago), and didn't have anything like that at all. Coffee, not coke. It really could be the sugar more than the caffeine. That'd be my theory. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. Guest #5 June 2, 2005 My AFF/I wrote "No caffeine next time" in my log book two jumps ago to help me be not so jittery/nervous on the ride up, and yes I stopped guzzling Red Bulls on the drive to the dz and it has helped. But now now I'm gonna have to get more sleep too. Am interested in how your withdrawal goes, I'm still doing coffee and the odd frappachino during the week. You can have it good, fast, or cheap: pick two.
jumpchikk 0 #6 June 2, 2005 Are you finding that you are sleepier during the day since you gave up caffeine? Our bodies tend to go for food when we are sleepy.
brierebecca 0 #7 June 2, 2005 Hmmmm....not sleepy, but definitely calmer. I'm thinking it's because I'm not on a constant caffeine up or down. It may be the sugar as well, cokes have plenty of that. I've been noticing that even though I'm eating like twice as much, I've lost a little weight. I didn't know caffeine was a dieuretic (sp?). I thought those just dehydrated you, not supressed your appetite. thanks for the responses!"Ive seen you hump air, hump the floor of the plane, and hump legs. flifree 0 #8 June 2, 2005 not sure about levels of caffeine in coke vs. coffee. i am a healthy eater, but have become a coffee junkie in the morning. here is what i can tell you: that the mayo clinic did a great study on this some time ago. in short, caffeine increases cortisol levels. increased cortisol levels stimulate appetite. many dietary supplements have caffeine in them, but it's a short term thing b/c caffeine is a diuretic and dehydrates you. caffeine can also trigger hypogycemia which will increase your appetite big time. doesn't seem to ring true with you.....so, maybe you are just a busy girl and need to feed the furnace!
 gmittar 0 #9 June 2, 2005 Cokes do have tons of refined sugar, which is always a bad thing. One counterintuitive thing about eating and weight is that eating more often speeds up your metabolism and you burn more. That's more often, not more volume on your same schedule. brierebecca 0 #13 June 2, 2005 I'm definitely eating more times a day, and more volume. It would be pretty hard for me to eat less than I was when I was drinking a lot of coke...I usually had a bagel during the day and then an early dinner. Now I'm eating something small for breakfast and lunch and larger portions at dinner. I'm just wondering if the increase in appetite is because of the sugar in cokes now..."Ive seen you hump air, hump the floor of the plane, and hump legs. dixieskydiver 0 #17 June 2, 2005 Been here done this, sucks. I gave up caffeine for 2 years in highschool and college because I was a serious coke junkie. We´re talking 5 or more a day here. Now I´ve fallen back to the dark side... I tried to quit again last semester and I had that same appetite increase and with my crappy diet at school I gained like 8 pounds and then said to hell with it and started drinking again. Paige 0 #19 June 2, 2005 I cut out sugar from my diet last year. I dropped 15 lbs. in 2 weeks. If you drink 2 sodas/pops a day you'll put on 15 lbs in a year. So I hear, per se WSJ 2003.Tunnel Pink Mafia Delegate www.TunnelPinkMafia.com
Icon134 0 #20 June 2, 2005 I gave it up for about 8 months a couple of years ago... kaerock 1 #23 June 3, 2005 I think it has absolutely everything to do with the amount of sugar in the coke you are no longer getting. I drink about 2-3 cokes before lunchtime, then I tried switching to diet coke for a couple of days and by lunch time I was STARVING. I was getting the same amount of caffine, but less carb, my body was missing the calories. The trick is to replace those calories with healthy things like fruit and granola and other such things...things that'll fill you up without actually containing a lot of calories (bagels NOT included). Eating low-calorie filling things trick your body into not being hungry, while you aren't consuming the amount of calories your body thinks you've consumed by how full you feel. I keep meaning to kick caffine, but it's so difficult, I'm jealous :> -R QuoteI'm definitely eating more times a day, and more volume.
