Question about Ritalin<sp>

but i'm very sure i'd rather not trade that chemical stability for my creativity and energy....and i can certainly feel the difference

thats funny. because what the drugs do for me is help bring my energy level down to a point where i can handle it... it is still WAY out of controll..;)

creativity on the otherhand... hasnt changed one bit for me.

off meds im full throttle till i crash.... like a sugar rush but a little longer.... on the meds everything is more even. the energy level is still there by far.. just stableized..

the reason why i switched to concerta though is because i DONT have to take it all the time.... just when i feel like it is going to help...

ja the energy isnt a problem..it is being able to focus to direct it that takes effort, but the drugs always made me feel sluggish and there was a major difference in the scope and tone of my ideas when i was on them at one point i lined up alot of the my paintings over the period when i was medicated and not, the differences were very obvious... Although I personally do not have ADHD, both my ex and my 28-year old daughter have it. So, yes, I have "lived with it" and I have seen, first hand, the effects that it has had on not only my daughter and my ex-, but also the effects it has had on the family, and also the effects it has had on their social and business relationships.

If you go back and read my first post about this, it was in response to minobu's question regarding people's experience with Ritalin. I NEVER said that it is the only answer -- what I did say is that is what extremely helpful in my daughter's case.

As far as looking for alternatives to Ritalin, I HAVE DEFINITELY researched ADHD in depth over the last 15 years (when my daughter was diagnosed with it) and she has even resorted to trying biofeedback as a way to control it. However, that, too, was not a viable solution for my daughter.

I do take offense to your statement "why work, develop and teach self discipline skills when a pill can make it all go away for you???" Just curious -- do you take aspirin for a headache or cold meds when you have a cold or any other over-the-counter drugs or prescription drugs?

This is my last post on this subject because it has definitely gotten away from the original question.

ask your daughter what SHE thinks... not what the doctors think.... SHE knows what and how she is, not the doctor...... the doctors get the info from the person, not the other way around...... im sure she knows what is best for HER..... the doctor can ONLY make an educated GUESS..:)

no.. as a general rule i do not, unless i am completely unable to function without them..most colds can be avoided by proper hygiene and lifestyle choices..when they do occur in a healthy individual they tend to be minor inconveniences.. aspirin is a naturally occurring substance, but even then i avoid it in nearly all circumstances..

people have lived for thousands of years without resorting to the kind of manufactured chemicals and levels of prescription pharmaceuticals our society is so enamored with the .. yet suddenly (in the last 50 particularly) 'a pill' is the answer to everything.. [:/]

there are almost always better alternatives.. but they take more time and effort than 'popping a few pills' :|

People had ADD and ADHD before, they just didn't know that's what it was. Instead of being diagnosed with a medical disorder, they were passed off as underachievers, class clowns and high school dropouts. Surprisingly, most ADD patients are very intelligent.

Doctors can now see the difference between ADD patients and "regular" people by using brain scans. It's a real chemical disorder of the brain and like many other disorders it can be controlled with medication.

Probably a good thing, as you confuse association with the condition to having it. Us who do have it do know far more about it than the Mayo clinic, doctors etc. We've spent years learining mechanisms to cope with it and we do quite nicely thank you.
