Please do me a favor...

Recommended Posts

because I am not enjoying me Monday morning site scan. I love all of you to much, whether we have had the chance to meet or not. Because I love all my brothers and sisters that love this sport like I have for so many years. This post is not going in one of the skydiving forums, more of you visit here than anywhere else. Please, please, please, think and act, and do whatever is necessary to save yourselves, and come back here to give me shit.

I try not to blow my horn, but I do try to convey through expeience how to be save, how to come home at the end of the weekend. I have been there and done that, literally. Static-line, AFF, tandem, the whole bit, before a lot of you were born, or at least before you you were of an understanding age.

I am sick of reading the reports that have been generated already this year, sick to the core of my heart. I know that I joke a lot about many things, but not today.

There have been many great skydivers that have been very personal friends of mine, that have conveyed some important messages to me over the years. I want to share some with you know, citations omitted.

Never go in with all your guns in thier holsters.
Never sacrifice altitude for stability.
Land safe, not close.
in fact, please review the "Golden Rules" listed on the SDC website
Your AAD isn't for you it's for me.
Most fatalities are not the result of a single circumstance.

These are just a few that come to mind this morning. I know that I am better at the do as I say not as I do routine, but I am a Dad so you know...

do this for me, GO TO SAFETY DAY! think about all the things that can happen and rehearse them in your mind. Not just when you are wearing your gear, but whenever you have a few spare moments of idle mind time. Muscle traing is not just from reptitve action but also repetitive mind training.

Check your gear, check your skill sets, check mother nature. If they are not all in date, don't jump. There is always another day, and that is what I want, to see you another day. It may be hard to understand that sometimes, I know, but please be there to share the sky with me, another day.

I send this message out of love, please accept it that way!

Amen. Thanks for posting that.

In the "land safe, not close" thing, the middle of a big "out" field is better than the edge, even if there's less walking close to the edge.

We had a local jumper hurt her ankle and damage property landing on a fence, instead of walking from the middle of a field. A much smaller penalty, but still less than good.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

I've always told students it doesn't matter where they land as long as they land safely. Some Instructors never realize students, especially the first jump variety, come with a built in idea that who ever lands closer to the target wins.

With continuing students I tell them there's no such thing as "landing out" unless they manage to figure a way to miss the whole damn planet . . .

On a personal level I've met some of the nicest people while walking down a country road, parachute over my shoulder, and miles from the DZ.
