Researching new gear, advice??

Recommended Posts

Looking to buy my first rig. I'm 6'2" about 195 pds with 52 jumps. I have been jumping on student gear. Mostly nav 240's, 220's,260's,300's. All over the map. Looking for advice on what to get. Something comfortable, fast but not to risky at this juncture. Maybe in the 190-220 range? Any advice as far as main, reserve, container etc will be appreciated. What to stay away from, what comfortable, affordable, new vs used......

check out the article on the site about a first rig and check out some of the previous post on this subject. they all pretty much recommend talking with your instructors about gear selection, buying used for a first rig and demoing when possible.

Have a search around DZ.com about various mains, there's a lot of great threads on f1-11 vs zero-p, 7-cell vs 9-cell, semi-elliptical designs or not and everything in between, look for characteristics that you find desirable like soft openings, landing flare etc. and then talk to your instructor or local gear store about possibly demoing said canopies.

There's a whole heap of threads about wingloadings for first rigs around that will give you a general idea. Brian Germains material provides a good reference regarding canopy size. Some of the designs you will try/buy will fly differently to the student canopies so don't go too small too fast.

One thing I do recommend though is getting a freefly friendly container if your budget permits, just because :) It's reassuring at thi[:s stage when you want to try a few new things.
