freeflir29 0 #1 May 17, 2005 Anyone have anything good bad or indifferen't to say about them. I got a quote for a PIMPED one today. 2500 4X4, 320 HP, several towing options, leather interior, 6 disc changer, XM Sat radio, SS steps door handles and mirrors, DVD player for the rear seats, 5 year/75,000 warranty, WBH (No badges or 'clutter' on the sides), power sunroof, and probably some other stuff I am forgetting at the moment. WrongWay 0 #2 May 17, 2005 My cousin has one and loves it. The only issue I would have with it is the limited bed space (compared to other SUV's), and I personally think it kinda looks funny. But other than that, apparently it's a good quality vehicle. Wrong Way D #27371 Mal Manera Rodriguez Cajun Chicken Ø Hellfish #451 The wiser wolf prevails. skymama 37 #5 May 17, 2005 I'm car shopping myself this week and have a Consumer Reports at home. I'll look it up for you when I get home later, but I think it's a recommended buy. PhreeZone 20 #6 May 17, 2005 Huge Gas guzzler. The guy I worked with that had one was lucky to get 20mpg. His average fill up was $65-75 recently to get a 350 mile range. If its going to be an every day driver, there are far better choices out there if you want to save $ on gas. Also look for them to be discontinued in the next few years since sales of them are hurting bad with the high gas prices currently. The Excursion and what ever was larger then the Suburban are already on the chopping block for 2006 if I remember right. AggieDave 6 #10 May 17, 2005 Ah, so you want it to haul a trailer...in that case, stay the fuck away from gas, go diesel. Also, if you're gonna haul a 34ft trailer, go with a 5th wheel, a regular hitch just sucks for that application. So you want a real hauling truck, buy atleast a 3/4 ton diesel. For me, if I'm buying gas I'm buying Chevy, if I'm buying diesel, I'm buying Ford. Also if you're putting together a badass truck for hauling, check out this site for some options you need (like a front end replacement) http://www.ranchhand.com You'll get more power, more reliability and better milage for hauling if you go with a truck thats meant for it, and with a diesel motor. No Clay, there really isn't a lot of pros and cons. Talk to anyone that has hauled anything like that with a gas truck, it sucks. You don't have to have a giant truck, do me a favor and go look at F-250s and F-350s, you can find them with extended cabs or 4-door cabs with a short bed that aren't huge, they're just normal sized trucks that are designed to haul stuff like your trailer. If you're going with a hitch, do me a favore and go to Ranch Hand's site to look at the rear bumpers. They're stronger then most hitches you'll find and have a higher class rating. Please please please, rethink your choice of gas over diesel. Call up some RV stores and talk to them about that choice, call up some ranch/trailer shops and talk to them about your choice. Do some searching on the web. You'll find that gas is a really bad choice. If you're worried about having a fast truck as well, don't worry about that, just look up Banks and that's all you need to know.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." You're gonna need a full ton just for the weight, and a full size pickup (i.e. long bed) to prevent trailer whip....even with anti sway. I will guarantee you that an SUV body WILL get walked around with that long of a trailer. I had a short bed pickup pulling a 30 footer, and would get "walked" on occasion. I'd also recommend spending the money for a Hensley Arrow hitch, or at the VERY least, a Reese dual-cam. Make sure it's a Class V hitch, too...Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. Slappie 9 #18 May 17, 2005 The Avalanche from Chevy is a different body on the Suburban frame and drive train. Kinda like an H2 it's also built on the Suburban frame and drive train. So all you're doing is buying a funky Suburban. "Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them." That will give you a goofy SUV to drive your kids to soccer in, but if you're gonna haul anything or pull anything over about 12ft then you're gonna HATE that damned thing (be it a surburban or a H2).--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Slappie 9 #20 May 17, 2005 I think we just blew Clay's visions of being a pimp in his lanche and trailer... You can buy the Avalanche and look cool going to and being at boogies w/out your pimp trailer. Or you can buy a pimped truck capable of towing your pimp trailer and look not so pimp going to and being at boogies, but being in awesome pimp trailer comfort when there. Take your pick.. You can't safely tow a 34ft trailer with a pimped out Avalanche the truck is not made for that type of application. The Ranch Hand stuff I've seen looks like good, solid build quality... the Hensley Arrow or Reese Twin cam would go on the trailer, anyhow. I've had good luck with the Reese Titan hitches, but regardless of what hitch manufacturer he's gonna go with, it's gonna need to be a Class V with the weight he'll be towing. Gonna have to have a GOOD brake controller, too - the Tekonsha Voyager is a really good one. Another strike against the SUV is gonna be the suspension...most likely it's not going to be set up for towing. Mileage-wise, he's probably looking at 15-17mpg highway, unloaded... once he dabs that trailer on the back, he's gonna drop to 8-10mpg, or maybe less With a diesel, he'll get 20+ unloaded, and probably 15-17 loaded... no-brainer, in my book! He's still gonna have to have a full ton to get the towing capacity - I'd have to look at the wheelbase for the Avalanche compared to a full-size pickup to see what the difference is in regards to trailer whip - which will have your asshole snipping divots out of your seat cushion in about 2 heartbeats! Once I'm back home for good, I'll be picking up a 3/4 or full ton Ram diesel and get it set up for towing, then getting another travel trailer... can you say "boogie season"? I knew you could! Looked again at the Ranch Hand stuff, the only bad thing about them is that you have to bolt on a receiver tube, which takes you down to 500 lbs tongue weight / 5k tow weight - too light for a 34' trailer.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim.
