Hey, there! Haven't been there long and you are already causing trouble:D. Virginia is weird when it comes to laws, so be careful. Now, I ain't siding with the cops here, but the Hampton roads area has the highest military to civillian ratio I have ever seen in my whole life. There's a lot of young sailors and soldiers there and an incredible amount of traffic accidents caused by them. You always hear about a sailor and his buddies dying in an auto accidents on the weekends. Or worse killing somebody. It doesn't give the cops the right to strong-arm, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are tired of it.

How's skydive Suffolk?

I agree. Get out of your parent's house and get in the real world

Spoken like a completely uninformed and ignorant individual. You know nothing about me, yet you make lame statements to attempt to somehow prove your point. Your only showing your immaturity.

As for the majority of individuals in this world that speak so poorly of our law enforcement, they are for the most part, criminals and low brow trailer folk. Being in the civil service myself, I run into these kinds of people everyday and 9 times out of 10 they have a reason to dislike the police. Probably because they run their lives in such a way that the police are required to babysit them constantly.

People that don't like cops:

Those that cannot follow traffic laws.
Those that cannot heed criminal laws.
Those that cannot stop beating their spouse in the trailer park.
Those that are habitual drug users
Those that are drug sellers.

As for the Va cop that was depicted on this thread, yeah, if he is really how you are portraying him, he's an ass, but instead the whole profession gets slammed.

This kind of thinking is like saying "All BASE jumpers are reckless individuals, and should be stopped" just because one jumped out of a plane and smacked the ground causing the closure of a DZ in Co.

What ever you do Do not speed in VA! Actually dont drive in VA with out of state tags, period! (...) When they ask to see the Radar gun he tells them that they cant. Isnt there some kind of regulation out there that says they have show them??

If there's any regulation about that, it's controlled by the individual state.

I know that most of the NC SHP guys used to make a point of showing you the speed on RADAR (or VASCAR), then clearing it while you watched. I respected that approach.

On the other hand, I was given a speeding ticket in a podunk near-the-beach-but-no-tourist-business Delaware town, after two of us in the front seat had been watching the speedometer all the way through town to be sure that I was 5 UNDER the limit (had gotten another bogus ticket the previous weekend). The asshole of an excuse for a cop in Shelbyville, DE, said that I was doing 15 over and refused to show me the radar (2 am ... not another car in sight). He just said that he didn't have to do it.

It's that small number of cops everywhere. I've seen great SHP in Va, and Little Hitlers. One VA trooper stopped me coming down the mountains into Shen Valley. I was truly speeding (again, middle of night), but hadn't been drinking or anything like that, and the car I was in loved curves. When he pulled me over, he said, "Ok, Ace ... let me see your pilot's license." I handed him my pilot's license, and he cracked up. No ticket that night ... just a warning.

Likewise, I was in Tennessee one late night, on an Interstate, and a Tenn trooper came up alongside me in an unmarked car. I was doing 20 over the limit and thought that I was screwed. He smiled and motioned me that I could keep going ... faster!

It all works out over the course of a lifetime, I guess.

See VA CODE § 46.2-882.

Specifically, "Law-enforcement officers using motor vehicle-based microcomputer devices or laser speed determination devices as provided for in this section shall, on request of any affected motorist, permit such motorist to observe the reading on the device. Nothing in this section, however, shall require any law-enforcement officer to allow affected motorists to observe any reading on any microcomputer device on any airplane or helicopter."

My read is this: It does not specifically mention the term 'radar' in this subsection, so this might be an error of omission in the legislative act that the officer is able to take advantage of. It does say the officer must show the motorist in the case of:

1. laser speed determination devices
2. vehicle-based microcomputer devices.

You may be screwed because of an oversight on the part of the legislature. Call your state representative and senator and ask them to add the word 'radar detection device' to this section. But that won't help you now if that is indeed the case.

Good luck,
Gardner

You forgot:
Those that don't like to be treated as a criminal with no cause
Those that don't like cops asking to search their vehicle for drugs and weapons when they were stopped for a headlight out
Those that don't like police-state roadblocks set up at random places where you are examined as though you are drunk or high, and your PAPERSSSS are demanded even though there was no cause to think you were intoxicated or doing anything wrong.

Those people have a problem with cops, too -- and they haven't done anything wrong.

Why is it that you don't believe an officer should be proactive and not reactive? How do you think cops catch people with 200 pounds of cocaine in their vehicle. Wait until the cocaine falls out of their gastank in the middle of a busy intersection? Ever have anybody you love killed by a drunk driver? I am 100% certain that you don't, because you wouldn't be so "anti-roadblock" aka sobriety checkpoint. Ever hear of a girl named Polly Klaas? If i remember correctly, she was in the trunk of that car that was never searched by the police when the killer/rapist/kidnapper was pulled over for speeding! If a cop has to only be reactive, instead of proactive in doing his job, there would be a lot more serious crimes taking place...murder, rape, kidnapping, armed robbery, etc.....

Don't drive with a defective vehcle, it's illiegal you know
Random set roadblock hmmm instead let's let everyone know where the roads will be blocked so they can use the non-blocked ones instead.
What you consider to be "no cause" does not always equate to what the officers percive.

Finally if you aproach an interaction with law enforcment, they same way you post here, you're probably lucky to not be incarcerated:ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r:
