So, Florida/southern people...

Recommended Posts

What's the best time for someone to take a trip down there with intent to jump his ass off? Not really too concerned with heat, just wanna know the best time to meet cool people, and have lots of fun.

I promised myself two big trips this year, I figure FL should be one of 'em since it seems like half of the damned members are from there ;)

Well jump your ass off, nowhere in S. FL. I mean I love my DZ but you did say jump your ass off.

So I'm thinking you want to do 8 to 10 jumps a day, Hope your a fast packer. DUH Sebastian,Z-hills,Titusville,Deland, etc etc. I'd invite you over to Clewiston, but it could be one of those slow days. Call ahead, find out the schedule.

If you do mean S.FL and you get to Miami, if it ain't busy you might be good, It's a catch 22 over there. Last couple times I been there, they were slammed and it was kinda the Bro thing going on, but where isn't it. \
Good Luck to you
Blue skies,
Summer is here. thats another hit and miss

So grue...If you're coming to Florida on those frequent flyer miles which you previously spoke of for "we know who"...then year round is always good at Deland and Titusville...both not too far from Orlando...or you can come into Tampa and go to Zhills.

All have fast planes and fast packers;)

Pfft, I can honestly say that has no bearing on the trip :)

You'll always be able to get on a plane year round in Deland, but it does slow down a little in the summer. You usually won't have to wait for people to get a load up, it just means we'll be down to 1 plane sometimes instead of 2 or 3. The busiest months are November through March but that also makes the wait for a plane a little longer sometimes. In the summer, there are also afternoon thunderstorms that slow jumping down a little but they usually come in and out pretty quickly.

I don't think I really answered the question, did I?

It's been mentioned to me that Deland is more of a team-oriented DZ, so I'd prolly enjoy watching a few team jumps or something there, but I get the impression I could actually jump a lot more at Zhills

Dammit I hate that reputation that some dz's get..Deland being "team oriented" ..yeah so are all the dz's in sunny Florida! "Team oriented" doesn't translate into you getting bumped from loads or not getting in your fun jumps. Doesn't matter if you're a freeflyer or belly flyer..there are plenty who will jump with you at both Deland and Zhills. I used to hear that Zhills was "more friendly" than Deland before I started living at Deland last year. Deland AND Zhills have great facilities, great people..and great jumpships.

At Titusville you will go to a minimum of 15,000 in 8 minutes with free organizing for both rw and ff. Additionally, we have a free bunkhouse with all the amenities. Also, we have a great view of the space center and the ocean. Can't beat it!B|

15,000'? Not bad. Is Titusville the DZ that goes to 18,000' if you pay extra?

Yup...they do hi alti jumps per request....most weekends...only a few dollars more and well worth it. Their KingAir is so fast to alti, you put your helmet on and get prepared to get out as soon as you get in;)...but it allows you to get in more jumps for the day.B| The view at Titusville is awesome!

Excellent! Speaking of high-alt, I decided that my reward to myself when I get my D in a couple years will be a HALO from 29k down in TN :o:o

Hey Grue,

I live in Iowa and in March my daughter and I went down to Orlando to play in the wind tunnel and also to take Scott Miller's canopy course at Deland. OMG we had an AWESOME time!!!! AND we learned a ton!!!! As far as friendly people at Deland, Bob Hallet one of the owners at Deland gave my daughter his pants when she ripped hers on a jump. Did I mention the great people at Deland?

We were both student jumpers at the time and we were treated great. We had also heard that Deland was team oriented and not for students without a license. God only knows where this type of rumor gets started because nothing could have gone better for us and everyone we met tried to teach us and make us better skydivers.

We worked in the wind tunnel with Chromy who is arguably one of the best tunnel coaches around and he will be in Iowa this weekend down at Brooklyn, Iowa for our super otter weekend. Come on down and experience the love. You will have a blast. Clicky follows - http://www.skydiveia.com
Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.

Good deal!

As much as I'd love to come down there, I doubt I'll get a chance to until later in the year. I'm planning on having my A by the end of June, at which point the only issue for travel becomes money and gear :)

Don't overlook Sebastian, dude! It's a really fun DZ. On Sunday they put up what, 12 or 13 loads, and there were enough people to just about fill the Caravan right at sunset (AWESOME!) :)
There is a camping area, and great showers, and the view is spectacular. Yes, we have only the Caravan through the summer (the Skyvan and Otter come down in winter from Crosskeys in New Jersey) but it's a comfy plane and although it isn't the fastest to altitude, it's a good one. The people there are really nice, there are a bunch of regulars who are quite friendly (I'm one!), and you can get instruction, coaching, and organizing. The LZ is nice and big, and there are golf courses nearby for some decent off-landing outs. There's even a snack bar that's getting up and running (as long as Mario can stay stocked on jalapeno poppers and chicken fingers!) Well, at least I think they never let themselves run out of BEER! :D

Really, it'd be cool to run into you there! Drop a line if you'll be making it down.

There are very friendly people in Deland. I never would have called it my home dz for 4 years if there weren't. If you decide to go there on a weekend when I'm around, I'll be more than happy to show you around and find people for you to jump with, including myself. Whenever you do end up in FL, Scott Miller's canopy course is a can't miss, especially now that you're starting out.

I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever dz you decide to go to. I just wanted to reinforce that Deland is not just a team dz.

Yes, and I highly recommend it. It would be very easy for you to hit Deland, Titusville, Sebastian, Lake Wales, Z-hills and the tunnel all in 1 week. They are all within 1-2 hours of each other. In Deland and Z-hills, you can also make appointments to visit the manufacturers if you like.

If I still lived up north and wanted to hit Florida, I'd probably hit multiple DZs. Zhills, Deland, T-ville, Sebastian are all pretty much a must and are all very close to each other.

If nothing else it'll give you a good idea of where to go the next year you come down.
