jumpchikk 0 #1 May 11, 2005 This thread is inspired by one of my precious friends who had a flat tire last Friday and was stranded on the side of the road because they didn't know how to change it... Love ya Lugnut!!! So, I'm wondering how many of you don't know how to change one and would you be willing to learn???

AggieDave 6 #3 May 11, 2005 Who the hell can't change a flat? Its not like you're trying to put a monkey plug in the tire or reseating the bead so you can make it home. People amaze me, if you're gonna spend that much money on something, learn how to do atleast some of the things you'll end up needing to do. Change tires, how to service the vehicle (oil change, lubing, etc), that's all very very basic stuff that anyone that owns a car should be able to do. Its not like its hard.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

skybytch 273 #6 May 11, 2005 I know how and have done it before, both on the side of the road and at a previous job. But with a cell phone and a Triple A membership, why bother even getting out of the car?

jumpchikk 0 #9 May 11, 2005 I drove by a guy today who seemed to be struggling with it... I would have stopped to help, but I was running late and I don't know how recepetive a guy would be for a girl to come up in a skirt asking if he needed help with that.... Its not like its hard. Lots of people can't even tell you where to put the oil in, much less how to change it. I disagree about "needing to do." I know how to do and have done a lot of stuff on a car; doesn't mean I'll ever do it again. I think it's worth every penny to let someone else get their hands and clothes dirty. jumpchikk 0 #11 May 11, 2005 Well, I agree that it's not necessarily something you "need" to do, but for me I get a certain satisfaction out of changing my own oil (thanks to my ex, who showed me how to do it several years ago)... but also, I try to be self-reliant in everything I do... (okay not doing a very good job at the packing thing, but I will eventually get there)
goose491 0 #12 May 11, 2005 Quote I hit a lot of curbs. I hit a lot of joggers lol. Everyone with a drivers licence should know how to change a tire. But let's not harp about it. I think anyone could figure it out given the absolute need to... and a whole afternoon to kill by the side of the road. lol. Perhaps there should be no AAA? My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! If you dont' know how to do it, you don't know if someone is fucking you over when you pay them to do the work. By "need to do" that stems from a conversation I had on Monday talking about how people don't maintain their vehicles worth a shit and its baffling since cars are very very expensive.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Thanatos340 1 #14 May 11, 2005 Hey Now!! Leave poor Lugnut alone!! She is one of them Yankee Girls. You cant expect her to know much. Seriously.. I cant believe how many people think that they do not need to know anything about the vehicles they depend so much on. The old, I am a Girl and therefore I am not supposed to know anything about cars is such Bullshit. I kinda took it to an extreme with my Daughter.. She has been Racing Junior Dragsters since she was 8 and helping work on cars since she was old enough to hand me a wrench. Now that she is 13, We bought her a Bradley GT 2 Kit Car. It came in a VERY big Box. If she wants a car to drive when she turns 16, She best have it built by then. (Actually we have been working on for a year now and it is about 60% done). But you can bet she is going to know just about anything about a car once she finishes building her own.

Yeah, I used to feel that way too. Was real proud of myself when I removed and replaced the radiator, fuel pump, alternator, and starter in one car I had. Was even prouder of myself when I rebuilt the automatic transmission (with help from a tranny guy yes, but I did most of it). Too many years of having grease ground into my fingers at all times, and being far away from Dad's extensive collection of tools (and that oh-so-handy hydraulic lift) changed that. unformed 0 #16 May 11, 2005 I don't maintain my car ... but that's why I bought a POS for $200. I owned a nice truck once, didn't change the oil for about a year, and felt really bad about it. So I sold it, and bought this car for $200. Doesn't need maintenance ... if it breaks down, I'll burn it and buy another car for $200. This ad space for sale. grue 1 #20 May 11, 2005 I'm a car geek, 'nuff said. In any case, I actually had a contest with a friend to see who, from a stopped position in the driver's seat, could pop the trunk, get out of the car, get out the tools and spare, and change the passenger side front tyre the fastest. Pathetic? Yeah. Hilarious? That too!cavete terrae.

I had a check engine light on that I took to a mechanic to get looked at. They told me that I the oxygen sensors were bad and needed to be replaced (about 200$+). I took it to AutoZone and got them to check the code for the light and I ended up buying some other funky little sensor for about $25 and replacing it myself.
