Changing a flat tire

Recommended Posts

I refused to get my driver's license til my dad taught me how to change a tire and how to change the oil.

I once got a flat tire on a day where the temperature was over 100 degrees, made it off the freeway and to the side of the road. Called AAA. They said they'd be out in 2 hours, and that I wasn't priority because I was in a "safe" place. standing for 2 hours with no shade and no water or sitting in a hot car in the sun is safe?? I changed the damn tire myself.

Anybody who doesn't know how to change a tire has to either be a ditz, or whoever taught them driver's ed failed to teach them properly!

I've changed flat tires a few times, including in a drenching rain. One time I couldn't get a lug-nut loose, it was jammed tight, so I tried standing on the wrench for extra leverage, and ended up snapping the bolt off! Ahhh FUCK! Luckily I was still able to get the tire changed, then went straight to a gas station (with a service center) to get a new bolt put in...

Well, this story should make you have faith, Dave.

A couple weeks ago, I was picking up my daughter's prom dress in downtown Atlanta. Put gas in the car and got back on I-75 South to head home.

I'm riding with the windows down in the 3'rd lane from the right, when I hear a noise that I think is coming from an old Volvo next to me. But I pass the car, and still hear the noise. I think, "Oh shit...I've got a flat tire."

Now, rush hour traffic in Atlanta starts around 3 and goes until 6'ish or so. It's right around 4:00 and I'm 3 lanes away from the right shoulder.

About that time, a Georgia State Patrol comes up behind me and sees my dilemna. Using his lights and his siren, he gets the traffic to make a spot for the two of us to get over. He pulls in front of me.

I get out of the car, open the trunk, put the dress in the seat and start unscrewing the lock down on the spare.

I happen to notice that the patrolman hasn't gotten out of his car yet. I look over and he has his window down. I walk over to him and he says, "Have you got everything you need?" Driving a demo car from my dealership, I couldn't answer that question and so I told him I wasn't sure. He told me he had another call he had to go on, but he would call a HERO truck to come and assist me. I said ok and he left.

From the time I started releasing the spare, jacked the car up, changed the tire and put the flat and tools into the trunk and got back into the car, only 18 minutes had elapsed! And the HERO never showed up

I'm pretty sure this is probably close to a record, whether it is a male or a female! ;) I don't need no stinkin' HERO to change [B]MY tire!!! :P

I think anyone could figure it out given the absolute need to... and a whole afternoon to kill by the side of the road.

The instructions are usually in the owner's manual, and printed on the spare tire cover. Every woman should have a husband or boyfriend show her how, so that she won't feel helpless.

There are some nuances involved, like loosening the nuts before you get the wheel off the ground, and the nut tightening sequence...

It's the first time I've changed a tire in probably 10 years, but it wasn't a big deal at all.

>:(Had the same thing happen!!! It hurts trying to bounce on a tire iron in flip flops.

I still haven't changed a tire on my own. Usually someone pulls up and rescues my car before I finish it off!! I've loosend up most of my own nuts though:$

How do a re-phrase that?

Anyway, point is, I'm sure I could change it if I had to, though the car would be at risk of certain injury.

On a car, I've changed tires, done oil changes, rebuilt an engine, dropped a tranny, replaced brakes, changed the air filter, replaced spark plugs and wires, and replaced a battery. On my motorcycle, I've replaced the battery.

:$ Nah...just don't mind getting my hands dirty. I've allowed myself to get spoiled and have taken my car in for oil changes lately. I just had fun doing all that stuff. :$

I've tried that too....(taking things apart) and now I'm stuck with two broken lawn mowers.

Hammers don't work on anything do they?:P

Sure they do... as long as they aren't over used...

On of the biggest problems I always had was excess parts when reassembled as long as the thing still worked... it didn't bother me much B|

This thread is inspired by one of my precious friends who had a flat tire last Friday and was stranded on the side of the road because they didn't know how to change it...

Love ya Lugnut!!! ;)

So, I'm wondering how many of you don't know how to change one and would you be willing to learn???

Change a tire, gap and install new plugs, set the timing ...and before those quick oil changes places came around, change the oil/filter.

I refuse to be helpless in this world.

Those are called pocket parts. If everything works, just put em in your pocket and walk away.
