>>What's the Bombshelter?<<

A pathetic version of a really cool jumper's bar that used to be on the DZ at Perris.

Remember when all it had was a dirt floor? Someone spilled the beer and Steve Mack didn't wwant it to go to waste and got down and tried to lick it up.

Those were the days!

"Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there."

"Your statement answered your question."

I was hunting for a new job to finance skydiving:S.
Other than that I am hanging aroung my smal German dZ each weekend, looking at a lot of clouds and not that much sun. The standard plane is downsized to Cessna 206 Turbine (yes - planes do exist, wher just 6 jumpers are on board) and I have signed up for an amazing 20way attempt at the end of this month. (whispers also talk about something around 40-50 going on one month later);)

So again, have fun an spend a short thought for the folks with the small planes and the expensive jump tickets on your next ride to altitude:)

Or, that straw thatched ceiling and fireplace, how it never burned down is amazing. And the Bar itself with everyone's named carved into it. They should have saved that piece of history.

It's funny now but when Tommy built the new Bombshelter we are all gagging on how yuppie it was. But I remember the first time I saw the original Bombshelter in the late 70s and thought, what whack jobs these Perris people are, everyone knows real jumpers drink and party in the parking lot for free . . .

In fact the new Bombshelter is what killed the case of beer tradition which was an important bonding process between Instructors and students. Students bringing in beer from off the DZ is all of a sudden frowned on and it was the beginning of the end of skydiving as we knew it.

At first Perris tried to sell cases of beer to students at bar prices. It was something like $40 a pop. That didn't work and they went to beer tickets students could purchase and that didn't catch on either. Now you're lucky to get a thank you as your students get in their cars and disappear forever.

No, it's different nowadays, but it sure as hell isn't better . . .

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
