Ipod question

Recommended Posts

I'm considering getting one.

I can't seem to find the 40GB ipod on the Apple website anymore. Was it discontinued?

Perhaps 20 GB is big enough for me, though.

A friend of mine said to get the xtended warranty/service thing, which is something I don't normally do when I purchase things like this.

anymore advice?

Buy it from BestBuy, they have a replacement plan instead of an extended warranty plan. It allows you to just exchange for a new one if something is wrong.

I got the 20GB thinking I would never fill it up, but before you know it you will be regreting not having bought the 40 GB

I was in Bestbuy. They ONLY had the 20 GB. And like I said, the 40 GB version isn't even listed on the Apple website anymore.

so I'm wondering why.

The 40GB iPod was discontinued in February. If you want to go bigger than 20GB you are limited to the iPod Photo 30 or 60GB.

OK I think I understand what happened.

They probably just figured with all that space, might as well make it store photos as well. So there is a 30 GB Ipod photo $349 and a 60 gb one $449.

But it seems to me that there is nothing stopping you from using ALL the space for just music.

eidted to add: 20GB IPOD = $299.

so $150 more would give me 3 times as much space.

Get the photo, I wish I had....if I'd waited one more month, I could have gotten the 30GB photo for the same price I paid for my regular 20GB...sigh.

If you can find the HP version, get it instead as it has the 1 year full warranty. The Apple model is just 90 days. It's the exact same thing, one just has a different logo on the back.:)

Here's another vote for the Photo version...the color screen is sooooooo nice it's worth getting. Also, they have come out with an inexpensive connector to allow you to download photos from your digital camera to the Photo iPod which will then sync with your computer the next time you plug into your computer.

For $50 more than the 20gb iPod you get 50% more gb's (30) and the color screen....if I was in the market that's what I'd go for.

If you have the cash...get the 60 gb version...doubling your space for $100 is likely worth the extra cash. At some point in time you'll be glad you have the extra gbs available. My 20gb is always full with iPhoto backups, music, video. (And I paid $599 US or $799 Canadian for it 2 1/2 years ago....a bit more than you'll pay for three times the storage and a color screen)

The 40 gig is available used from people.

i bought one from craigslist.org for $300
(goto graigslist.org, click the nearest city from the column in the left, the look under FOR SALE-->Electronics)

or try backpage.com same sort of deal.

wait, you got a 20 GB Ipod that has video 2.5 years ago??

sorry I'm new at this stuff. I didn't know that the old 20 GB Ipod could do that.

Sorry, I wasn't clear...it has backups of video files for iMovie projects. It has no capabilities to play video.

I use my iPod to backup projects and also to move material off my iMac when space is running short. I have 120gb in the iMac and 160 and 60 gb external Firewire drives...and I still run out of space:P

Ok, I'll tell you what.. I have got an iPod Mini and for me it's absolute enough.. When I'm away from my iBook, which rarely ever happens, I take the iPod with me and when I come back I can change everything or do whatever I want. I'm not that kind of guy that always needs his whole collection of music with him, I just want to listen to it when I'm on the road. And 6 GB is 100 hours music, which equals to 4 days music non stop.. It also looks better, is lighter, the batterie lasts longer AND it fits into the pocket of the MLW on my rig B|

Go and buy a mini!

I got the 20GB one. I have 1000 songs on it and room for about 5000 more.

A couple of people have recommended getting the HP version of the iPod. If you ask me, I'd advise against it. The HP version is ONLY compatible with windows. The apple version, when configured on a PC, can be used on PC and Mac. If you ever go back and forth between platforms, even if it's just to use the iPod as an external drive, you'll need the cross-platform capability.

Step away from the crack pipe.;)

The HP works just fine on a Mac. In fact, I just got done snagging some songs from a co-worker's Apple Powerbook onto my HP iPod 20GB using his copy of iTunes.

I'm also looking into getting an Ipod so I thought I'd share this:

http://www.butterflyphoto.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=IPOD60GB#

$379 with free shipping for the 60gb photo version. Seems like a helluva good deal to me. Plus the new photo ipods have a 15 hour battery life instead of the 12 hours for the 20gb version. Course they're a little bit bigger, but so what. I want to convert my cd collection to digital so I can take it with me, and this is quickly becoming the way I think I want to do it. The photo option looks a little gimmicky, but the color screen looks sweet.

Drunkmonkey: Use that $300 to get a new ipod instead of your friend's used one. Why should he get the benefit of a fresh warranty when you basically paid for his new ipod. ;)

Well, maybe I'm wrong. It's been known to happen. I have been told by at least three people that their HP iPods didn't work when they tried to use them with a Mac.

http://www.epinions.com/pr-Online_Stores_Services-Butterfly_Photo_com/display_~reviews looks like some are positive reviews, some are negative. There happens to be a couple negative reivews up top, but overall the company is getting 4 checks out of 5. So some people had bad experiences, most did not.

I might check out this offer.
