New cat questions...

Recommended Posts

I had a cat a long while back. I didn't have a shirt on and the cat was sleeping on my chest. Some how the window slammed shut in the middle of the night and my cat freaked. The cat reached over my left shoulder with his paw exhibiting fully extracted claws... and pushed off my belly with both back feet. I woke up SO fast and grabbed the cat mid lunge.

After saying Fuck ...Ow... ow... oh fuck.. ow... I removed his claws from my back and put him aside. You wouldn't believe how wide of a scratch pattern the back paw of a full grown cat can produce.
My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

Seriously, if you have the room and time for another pet, please adopt a cat that needs both.

Okay, okay...I give! I looked at the sites for the local adoption/rescue agencies and after looking at the pics, I've caved.:$ I'm going to go after this coming weekend and rescue a kitten.:)

Sound of wild applause from FL!

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

Glad I could inspire applause. I actually found two young Bengal rescues in N. TX. I just sent the shelter an e-mail about them and hope to hear back on either of them tomorrow.B|

especially when they forget to retract their claws.

LOL! Thats why both hubby and I sleep in body armor (aka 'under the covers'). One hot night we didn't turn on the AC and instead just slept on top of the blankets - she got both of us at differnt points durring the night. Its like a hundred little needles. You wake up real quick, but can't get too mad at her - she's too cute when she does it :P:D

WWW.softclaws.com Just got these on my siamese today. Just on the front paws for now, and I managed to do it alone, lol.

I don't want a cat that's extremely independant, skittish, or anti-social.

A dog :D

Contrair ....

All of my cats a people lap pets, they are very well socialized, Ihave gotten them all young and played with them constantly.....

Misty, unfortunately you didn't get to see that side of her, but Feather is like that. Just tonight, she came right up to me while I was typing at the couch, and insinuated herself into being a little purring warm crescent right on my lap, so I could skritch her neck, head and chin. :)
Kris, that cat is cool lookin'! Wow! Never seen anything like that. You say they're domesticated and friendly?! :o

So FYI on the whole water thing....it's highly over rated. :S

Mem will jump in the shower with me and if I don't let him in the bathroom with me he will claw the carpet. I now have torn up carpet at the bathroom doorway. So I've put duct tape over the area he will claw for those times when I forget to leave the door open a crack.

Let's see, he will meow at the fridge for ice cubes and if you try to get yourself a glass of water out of the kitchen sink expect the cat to be in the sink trying to get his own water.

So like I said...love of water highly over rated. :S

BTW, he is a pure bred persian, who love water, likes dogs (unless they are SUPER hyper), is addicted to catnip, kneeds like a banshee, but won't let you pick him up.

*making sure none of the guys are looking at this post*

Okay, the coast is clear.;)

Hi, my name is Kris and I like cats. *Hello, Kris!*

Right now, I had an older Himalayan, but Kashmir is now with sister as she adores her and she wasn't being at all sociable with my rommate's cats.:( I've tried everything to get them to get along, and they like her, she can't stand them, so she's off at her new home with my sister:(

So, I'm looking for a new cat, and I really want a Bengal (domestic cats that are bred from Asian Snow Leopards). However, before I shell out several hundred for a cat, are there any other breeds that are like them in temperment? In short, Bengals are known to love the water, to play fetch, like to take walks on a leash, and are very outgoing.

If I can find that in another breed, I can live without the Bengal look, and I would prefer to save something from a shelter or pound.

I don't want a cat that's extremely independant, skittish, or anti-social.

Any ideas?:|

Yup - a Maine Coon cat - they're like a dog in a cat's body.

*note: the attached pic was not my cat, but almost his twin. Before he died, Nimitz stood about 12 inches at the shoulder and weighed 16 lbs.

My youngest cat is half Ocicat. Great temperament, extremely intelligent, handsome, LARGE (15 pounds and still growing!), affectionate, likes water and always wants to be near me. I know for a fact he has some nieces and nephews that were born a few weeks ago and "mom" will be looking for homes for them once they are about 8 weeks old. PM me if you are interested and I can put you in touch with "mom".

Also check out the Manx breed. It's the (usually) tailless breed (usually genetically tailless, but some tails make it through and are sometimes docked) with hind legs somewhat longer than the fronts, so looks much like a bobcat. Their temperment is more like a dog, and they even have a fascination with water, often climbing into the bathtub or creeks on their own. They don't put up with any shit from dogs and are very independent, but like hangin' with people. I've had many cats; the manx is the most like a dog in temperment than any other cat I've ever known. A buddy of mine has one and he's a dog person; he says it's the coolest cat he's ever seen. Check it out. Manx, Manx, and more Manx.

I have a five month old Bengal cat. Actually he is only 3/4 Bengal and we got him cheap.

Visiually he is a very cool looking cat, all sleek and shiny and he does have a sort of wild/exotic look to him.
He is more muscular and more athletic than your normal domestic cat. He can jump up on any counter or piece of furniture ( I think he jumps 3 feet from a stand-still). He is also very high-energy, always on the go.
He has a love/hate relationship with water. Due to his ancestry he is fascinated with water. He loves to watch me take a bath. But he doesn't like getting wet.
He loves people and is not shy or aggressiv. But he is not exactly a lap-cat either. He is way to high strung to lay down for more than five minutes.

I think Bengals are very fascinating cats with a distinct wild side to them. I would get another one!

I have some pictures of him on my webpage

I'll second the suggestion for a Maine Coon cat as well. My oldest cat I think must be part Maine Coon and he has the best personality and temperament. My guy is a pet store "mutt" but everything I've read and the pictures I've seen of Maine Coons describe him perfectly except he's a little smaller than most Maine Coons. In his prime, I don't think he ever weighed more then 13 pounds, and now that he's getting on in years, he's a very lean 10 pounds!

If I was going to actually buy a purebred cat, I'd think about a Maine Coon, an Ocicat or a Bengal.

Also, my personal experience- a neutered male cat makes a better pet than a female cat. More affectionate and outgoing. I love my little girl kitty, but she's a bitch sometimes! My two boys are really sweet all the time!

Loud Cheers from IL!!! :D:D:D:D:D

Course I knew you had that in ya ;) But do me this favor, dont settle. If there isnt a kitty there that is what you want, go back again and again. Try different ones. There is one out there in one of those lilttle cages with your name on it :)

I really like my dog, Billy Bob, but I am really more of a cat person. Ellie Mae is a fantastic house-only cat. She would love to be inside/outside, but I don't have the heart to deal with any more horrific cat accidents and deaths. As it is, she is content to sit in the windows and gaze outside. She doesn't like a leash much, but I do take her out front and back on occasion with one on. She fetches, loves to sit on the keyboard while I type, and is fascinated with Q-tips. She doesn't like to be wet, but loves to sit on the edge of the tub between the shower curtains while we shower, getting a sort of sauna. I had never paid for a cat in my life, but we found Ellie in a PetSmart in Augusta, GA when we moved there; she was the only cat there.

There are so many hazards for outside cats! I've compromised and started giving my oldest cat supervised yard privileges (once we had a yard!) Now the youngest gets them too, but the middle one can't be trusted. Our neighbors think we're nuts, but as soon as one of them tries to go under or around the fence, he goes back inside, and they're only allowed out if one of us is with them. I can't wait for lightning bug season this year because Spike's going to have a field day chasing them!

I can remember Nimitz (our Maine Coon) during lightning bug time... he'd jump up and grab them in a paw like we'd catch a ball in our fist... then open up his paw to look at it and get all indignant when it would fly off.... :D:D

He'd look at me like "Did you see that??" :D:D:D

My guys enjoy the yard so much! Just eating the grass and sniffing the fresh air and the flowers! I've always had strictly inside cats so even giving them "yard privileges" is a big deal for me! I'm actually amazed that for the most part they seem to respect the fence! Making them go back inside right away is a pretty good incentive for them to stay in the yard! (And they say you can't train cats!)

LOL! Yesterday I was sitting on the couch with an unobstructed view out the front door to the oak tree in the front yard. 3 of my cats were outside and the 4th one was resting beside me. All of a sudden this one jumped up to a standing position, looking excitedly towards the front door. I turned to look and just wondered what she was looking at... then I see my smallest cat plop down right on the lawn from out of nowhere! I was like WHAT THE FUCK?!? I ran outside to see a branch swinging back and forth directly above where I saw her land! Damn... she was fine though, just knocked the breath out for a bit... I'm guessing she was screaming "HELP!" after losing her balance on the branch or something... :S damn crazy cats!

Yeah, they can be strange!! Our tortoiseshell tabby, JC, used to like to sleep on top of the doors - she'd just straight up and lay on the top edge.

This always ended in one of two ways:
1. Her mewling pitiously until someone took pity on her and lifted her down, or;

2. Her going to sleep up there and falling off.... :D

:D:D You could have videotaped that and won $5000 on AFV!

Remember I mentioned the one that was sitting by me when the other fell out of the tree? She used to get stuck in a tree and not be able to get down. Not once, not twice, but three fucking times, all in the same goddamn tree on the same goddamn branch, 30 feet off the ground! I think she's learned her lesson though, the last time was a year and a half ago. The second time I saw her up there, I got my videocamera, zoomed in on her, yelled at her "HEY KITTY CAT!.... DUMB ASS!!!" Sounds funny as hell when I play it back on the TV. :D Thankfully, the tree was easy for me to climb. Just took a duffel bag along, was up there in 2 minutes and back down in 2 minutes, but it took 10 minutes to get the stoopid cat in the bag! :S:D

The third time it happened, I wore my video helmet and camera... but it was just past sunset so it didn't come out good, but you can barely see me sitting back on the groun holding my cat up and giving her the "birdie"... if you catch my drift... :D

Yeah, but it was usually the middle of the night when she'd do it... we'd just hear the "thump"...
