Our first day of training.. Any help?

Recommended Posts

Not to slam any DZs here, but having your pilot be your jumpmaster is NOT a good idea (besides being against USPA BSRs). Think about it: what happens if the dude before you gets out and you get a student in tow? The procedures call for the jumpmaster to cut the static line. How difficult is it for a pilot to keep control of the airplane, keep the airplane over the dropzone (or another suitable landing area) AND dispatch the student? What if YOU are the last student out and therefor the pilot has no help whatsoever?
I would recommend going to a USPA dropzone first off, and second at least to a DZ that doesn't use the pilot as a JM. I know of at least one DZ that had their USPA membership jerked for pulling such a stunt. As was also mentioned, I personally believe AFF is a much more effective way of learning to skydive. Sure, you jumps might be cheaper now, but in the long run you will pay (both monetarily and otherwise).

First major problem I see:
Work on the sign language thingie. The Spinal Tap shizzle's gotta go. It should be the pinkie and the thumb, not the index finger!:|

tecdad...dude...OMG where do I start? I care about you as a newbie and I want you do live this sport for a very long time. Please please please...never let your egoi surpass you. One second of distraction could mean your life in this sport. My advice is to keep your head on a swivel both in freefall and especially under canopy. Work on accuracy landings. If you are out and haven't done that yet, do self talk and calm yourself that you are "fine and can do this" and plant your ass right where you want to be. If you can't do that, we need to talk.

As above Lodi is not USPA affiliated. :S

No, but their instructors are USPA rated. Even if they're not USPA rated, it's still the wrong way to do it.

If i where you i would go for AFF so much more fun:D. Me i did 10 static line jumps and the exits all sucked hated sitting in the door. ended up doing AFF and have never looked back its just so much more rewarding. Now i will rear dive, front float or any other exit:).

Man, you will go far if you keep that attitude!:)

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

When I started jumping, there were only two of us and my plane only held two, so I had to do static lines with the pilot as jumpmaster.

In today's world, I would think twice about training at a DZ where they do that. It's just no longer necessary and adds an unnecessary element of risk.

Def. talk to Will about any problems you are having with your jumps. I don't think you are the only person ever to switch from static line to aff.

And remember, day 1 is pretty damn tough no matter what. I always felt better as a student on my second day in a row ... like I got more comfortable with the whole experience.

Good luck in your jumps! We have a great summer ahead of us!
