In the days before freefall parachuting became the norm many thought just falling though the air would make you lose consciousness. I'll bet many suicides from high places still count on that.

people that do that shit deserve no sympathy. had a buddy do it...life sux ALOT sometimes...god knows, during life many times you'll think there's no other way..the ones that find another way...true survivor (woohoo!)

I used to work on a crisis intervention team where we'd try and talk down potential suiciders, sometimes have to interview them AFTER the fact, when the attempt failed... MOST of the time, in my experience, the surviving person says that the second they stepped off the bridge/building or took the pills or whatever that they wished they wouldn't have done it... of course then there are those who are more depressed that they didn't succeed...

I am sorry that your firned's passing has affected you so deeply, left you with so much anger. Having said that, to say that suicidal people are not deservig of sympathy is to say that you do not truely undestand. Suicide is a lot like skydiving. You can have somebdoy close to you do it and think you know why, but until you make a serious go at it, you'll never truely understand. And while i wish you healing and peace of mind, it is my sincerest hope that you never truely come to understand what it means to be that depressed.

as for not knowing what things of htat nature feel like....please don't think i'm trying to put in my $.02 in where i have no idea what i'm talking about.

does it bother me that my friend is gone...years later; of course. he had my empathy, but the difference is - we're put here to live through whatever we have to ... survival ya know.

hearts are still breaking...going through
something(s) or having emotional state that is unexplainable...is the absolute worst, but, to act on it and kill yourself...that's where the "no remorse" comment comes from.

of course love, prayer,sympathy/empathy and a mere shoulder is always offered from my part...but when someone intentionally takes their life...must say they can only be thinking of themself.

I'm with you on this one. My first response was "fuck him, the quitter!". Sure, he got to end his suffering, but only at the expense of those who witnessed his act and/or the aftermath, and those who will miss him and wonder why. He could have at least done it somewhere privately and saved the complete strangers some angst. Ending your problems by adding to others' is a bullshit way out. Fuck him.

you raise a really good point... I've often thought that people that suicide in public intentionally go out that way in a last show of anger or defiance or to inflict some form of harm on others. Now, I know it's not ALWAYS that way, but I think it's sometimes true.

And it is angering that someone would do that in public, since it is SO harmful and traumatic to people who witness it. Even to people (like cops) who are more "seasoned," it's traumatic. But you know, even when someone does it "privately" as you suggest, there is ALWAYS someone else hurt or otherwise affected... familiy members wondering why, EMTs or whoever finds the body, hopefully before much decomp has occurred, etc.

Interesting story... when I did emergency psychiatric work, I saw a patient in Vanderbilt Univ Hospital, a young guy, maybe 17 or so, who had taken his mom's .38 out of her nightstand after school. Mom was at work. He rode his bike into the woods, put the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. Presumably he went unconscious, woke up finding blood all over himself, picked up his bike and returned home. Mom, having come home from work by now, saw him and freaked, thinking he suffered a head injury from his bike. Once in the ER, the physician noticed the burn marks in his mouth and the exit wound on the top of his head. When asked about it, the kid couldn't remember a thing. Once he was treated and was stable enough to be transferred to the psych ward, I was called to interview him. Turns out he took out a part of his brain that prevented him from remembering not only that he attempted to kill himself w/ his mom's gun, but that he had ever been depressed in the first place! Sadly, he effectively lobotomized himself... he may never be depressed again, but he won't really experience joy, happiness, normalcy, etc.
