Recommendations for tattoo artist in Chicago?

Recommended Posts

So as my graduation present to myself, I am getting a new tattoo when I finish AFP. Hopefully that will be pretty soon, so I gotta find a place to get it done. I got all my current tattoo's before I moved here, so I don't have a place here.
The couple places I checked out were really overpriced and I didn't like the vibe I got there. Can anyone recommend someone who has personally done some work on you?
All my tattoos have cost around $100 or less, so any place that tells me it'll be $200, I'm not interested.

Got any recommendations for me?? Thanx. B|

Jade Dragon Tattoo on Belmont. It's somewhere west of Cicero, but before Austin.

I have heard of it. Have you actually had work done there?

Most places should charge by hour or intricacy of design. $100.00 per hour is going rate in the East. So it depends on what you want. What are you going to get? Where? :)

Ya, I've always been charged based on the design.

I'm still deciding between something with a closing pin, or Pinky (WB cartoon) under canopy. B| Not super huge. Probably on my upper arm or hip.

I love tattoos on women, if there in the right spots. The upper arm is a pretty masculine spot. IMO.

I like the Pinky under canopy idea though. :D

Both my tattoos were done there and I think they do a good job. But I'm no expert!

Who was the person who did yours? How much was it?

Ya, well it would be up by my shoulder, not on the bicep. ;) I was first thinking on my shoulder blade, but I already have one between the shoulder blades, so thats probably too close together. I could also do the lower back. Ah, decisions, decisions... :)

I got my inking done at Jade Dragon as well. The artist I had was amazing. He took my design, laid it on my back, tweaked it, and had me done in less than an hour. Everywhere else wanted to charge me for at least 2 full hours. This guy quoted me a flat rate and was done quickly, but did beautiful work.

I may make a trip up to Chicago this summer just to go get more work done there!!!

Well that and see Sunny of course!!! ;)

Goudha is for Buddha, and that's good enough for me!

Well, my first one I got about 8 years ago and I don't think the artist is there anymore. I just got a little one on the back of my shoulder about a month ago. At the moment I can't remember his name, but I'm sure I've got his card at home. I'll look for it.

They charge by the size and design, but they also have upcharges for certain parts of the body. They'll do custom stuff, and they also have every wall covered with books of designs. I think I paid about $75.00 for my new one (its a lady bug, cute and girly). Kind of pricey, but he did do a good job and the small tattoos can come out really bad!

My older tat is holding up just fine, too. Maybe a little faded (tanning beds don't help) but I think it still looks great.

Fat Joe is supposed to be THE GUY (its his shop) but I'm sure he's got a waiting list.

Whatever you do, don't get it tattooed on any spaces that procreation will alter, i.e. breast or lower abdomen. Knew a gal whose butterfly tat looked like it was painted by Salvador Dali after she had kids.

HAHAHAAAA Classic!

Ha!! :D Well actually, I have one on my boob now, but I made sure it will only be enhanced by gravitational forces. ;) :D

Ya, that does sound pricey for a ladybug!! My husband went there to get a gekko and they quoted him like $150! He ended up getting it in CA for $60.

I can't believe everyone goes to Jade Dragon! There seems to be quite a few tat shops in the city, hasn't anyone gone somewhere else?? C'mon, someone's gotta have some great, unknown shop that does awesome work!! B|

They're pricey for sure. They've also got all these scary pictures on the wall of infected tattoos and piercings that were done at other places. Propaganda, I know. But I also know they did a good job for me and I've seen some really bad tattoos.

Plus I was just told by a friend who lives in Chi-town. That's not really a "good" part of town.

So it's gotta be an awesome tattoo shop :D
