Seriously though, this is a nice step, but they're not hitting 1TB until 2009.

Hell, there are desktop drives at 500GB right now and one vendor is roadmapped to release a 1TB desktop drive next year.

That's 1TB of goodness in a 3.5" form-factor.:o

True, drives do have a motor for the platters and the electromagnetic actuator for the arm.

However, the holographic will have moving parts as well, even if it's just the optics for laser tracking.

The key will be surface area. Although it will not contain storage it will affect the optics. Sooner or later this will be addressed by the storage industry. DVD is cool and all, but the life of a DVD is horrible compared to VHS. Just like LPs, if you treat them right, they are great, but the risk of damage per incident is much higher. There is a a reason that everyone still uses tape for backup.
