Sounds like you haven't met the right ones!! ;) I just saw this thread, Slurp56 gave you some good info. I don't think the guy was trying to hose you, stuff like that is just normal wear & tear. It was definitely time for a timing belt!!! Big bucks if it breaks as was pointed out, that's an important part of the preventive maintenance. Think of it in terms of repacking your reserve. :)

Hey whats up Liz,

A timing belt replacement is anywhere from $250 - $500.00 depending on the car. Catastrophic converters are very expensive and can sometimes run $600 $700 for one, again, depending on the car. Given that you need two and a timing belt the $1,300.00 probaly is not that bad. Get a second estimate, and a third.
