Make and model of your car + the year it was born..

Might be able to help u out....

As for the $1300 , I would spend it all on jump tickets.... I hate being responsible

just a question...did a trusted mechanic tell you the timig belt is shot?

for a 2000 that seems a bit of an (excuse the phrase) ass fuck!

the pipes should be replacerd if they are how you saw them but the timing belt is just ahuge item that they think they can make the girl pay for when they dont have to do the work or work is slow so they'll make the women pay for it[:/]

a lot of people have been asking me if i've had the timing belt replaced. the car does have about 120,000 miles on it at this point.... so it's probably pretty close to due. [:/]

midas sucks!

i've had some mechanics try to rip me off before - but luckily i knew a little better. :)
i have a great mechanic in sterling that i trust. if you want to try them, let me know and i'll get you the # and address.

midas really really sucks. :| oh, well. the mechanic that i'm going to now is the one that works on my sister's cars. she trusts him. i'm just going to have to suck this one up and take the hit. i really haven't had to put any money at all into the car till now. so, i guess it's to be expected. thanks, anyway!! :)

Hint.. Autoparts store for the tailpipes and catalytic converters..this is NOT all that hard....The timing belt... a tad harder.. try some different shops...

OH and buy some GOOD gloves..... Tools can be had at a hock shop.. basic stuff like wrences and socket set. You should have those anyway:)

Tools? What are those?

I'm so lucky that I have a guy that works on my van. I get the parts and he puts them on.

you know... you are totally right. and next time, I'm going to give it a shot. (God help me!) But $1300 is a LOT to throw at a car that was working fine a few days ago. :S I've changed oil before... haha... that's a start, right? :)

Hey I like being self sufficient.. its all that scaring the hell out of the guys thing I do so well;)

Hey, I get the parts. I just don't like to get my hands dirty, plus I'd rather he do the work and I'll bring him the pizza and beers.

I would drive that car to one of my SKYDIVING bros or sisters and say can you hook it up. to bad your not close to S. FL I'd send you over to my cousin you'd be rollin in no time.

or take the car to one of those pull drag push it inn and use it for the DP on a cheap car with A/C. skydiving budget en all.

Good luck kid.

If it's an interference type engine, then the timing belt is probably way past due to be changed. I had to change the one in my old Tiburon at 60K.

If you lose the timing belt in an interference engine, you're probably going to seriously mess up your valves.

It's a Honda Civic 2000. It may be too late though. He was going to start on it tonight. [:/]

Since you have a car I am familiar with....

With the timing belt, you are paying for labor. The belt itself is about $35 (probably less) for a business at Honda. As long as he is doing the belt, make sure he replaces the water pump as well. You are *supposed* to change the timing belt every 90,000 miles.

Your car has only 1 catalytic converter. Depending on the model of civic, it is either right in front of the engine on the exhaust manifold or right behind the A pipe under the car. The 2nd thing that *looks* like a catalytic converter is actually a resonator, which dont typically need to be replaced.

Depending on the pipes and hoses that have holes or are broken, if its an exhaust, you can buy a new complete *performance* system for around $500.

Just be aware that at 120,000 miles you are getting to that point where things start getting worn. If you have a 5speed transmission, the clutch will start to go out as well above that mileage. Depending on how you drive, you may get more miles.

If you were local I'd charge you about $100 + beer/pizza in labor, then there would be maybe $300 in parts tops. bummer. :(

Been there, done that. About 800 miles from home too [:/]

EDIT:
FWIW, your car is an interference design and the belt probably should have been changed 20k miles ago.
it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
