Just like some kids who are scared of Santa at the mall or Goofy at Disney. Some kids love them, others are scared to death of them. Clowns tend to "get in your face" more and are loud and acting all cazy sometimes. To a child who is scared of them, I am sure it can become quite traumatic. Then as teens or adults, they see the scary clowns in films and such and it just makes the fear that much worse. But I would guess that the root of the fear is as a child.
