Actually, I could give you a long treatise on fear of clowns, but I'll spare you all but this small part. When McDonald's was first moving into Japan, it was pointed out to them that a white-faced character symbolized fear and death. They spent about a year introducing Ronald McDonald as being the exception -- sort of like our Caspar the Friendly Ghost. (Don't ask how I know this stuff ... it's a sickness!)
