AggieDave 6 #51 September 24, 2003 Yeah, but I doubt I could play my trumpet in freefall, much less make a formation while playing... --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
Bolas 5 #52 September 24, 2003 Yup started with the recorder in elementary school (I can still play "Mary had a Little Lamb" to this day... Started playing the tuba in 6th grade. I actually was in the high school marching band while still in middle school (they needed tubas bad). I was so uncoordinated (some things don't change ) that I couldn't play and march at the same time so I sat on the sideline in a chair) I was in all County band every year, all regional band every year, and I made first alternate for all state my senior year. I even owned my own tuba, it was worth more than my first car ('82 Chevette Scooter... not even close ) The most fun I had in band was at Virginia Tech in the Marching Virginians. I was part of the tuba line (there were about 30 of us). It was like a fraternity without the dues (kind of like DZ's)... binge drinking, wild parties, slip and slides, etc. I sold the tuba about 9 years ago to buy a PC. I keep telling myself someday I'll get back in it, but this sport is taking all my time and money currently.Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. NWFlyer 2 #53 April 4, 2005 Bumping this thread because I just got an e-mail from someone who is organizing a band reunion for my high school. It suddenly hit me "wow, I've been out of high school for 17 years" and "once a geek, always a geek!" Flute and piccolo for me. Haven't picked up either since I quit at the beginning of junior year, though. it was a real kick to see some of the names on the e-mail address list, though! People I haven't thought about in FOREVER!"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. I played french horn, and quite 5 days after my marching band got back from our 8 day trip to Hawaii. ---- -God, you are the perfect amount of dumb... derivative 0 #58 April 5, 2005 You betcha! Started on trumpet in Jr. High, but I really wanted to play the drums. In high school, I played in: Marching Band (snare) Symphonic Band (a potpourri of percussion) Jazz Band/Show Band/Choir (set) Orchestra (see symphonic band) Also played in pit orchestras for outdoor theater and community orchestras. Now, i play my Yamaha 5-string (love the low B)! ...the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, and make it possible. - T.E. Snowwhite 0 #59 April 5, 2005 And I was gonna ask you if you knew what the 5th String was for, guess you know. Love watching bands with a 5 or 6 String Bass player, who only plays 4 of the strings.....skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com
dgm458 0 #60 April 5, 2005 I played different saxophones through junior high and high school. Junior high was in a large school district so it was plenty fun...size of the marching band was about 120. We did a couple of NCAA football halftimes and a lot of parades. I moved to a small school district for high school that had less than 90 people in my entire CLASS. Band had about 35 people. I still enjoyed it, but it was on the bottom of the budget list at the school board meetings. My tenor sax and bari sax were both over 25 years old and in need of heavy repair. Most repairs I did myself or paid someone out of my own pocket. I owned an alto sax, but I hated playing it. I played with way too much energy for a small instrument. I had to quit after junior year because of graduation issues. I had good grades, but you only got credit for music for two of four years and athletics for two of four years. If I would have stayed w/ both, I wouldn't have had enough credits for graduation. Something had to go and the athletic budget was quite larger. I still pick up the alto occasionally. It's been 13 years.-------------------------------------------------- Failure to prepare is preparing to fail
