OrangeJumper 0 #5 March 28, 2005 QuoteWhat was your initial reason for joining the military? How old were you, where were you in your life, and what made you choose your branch? I joined the AF when I was 18. I guess I picked the AF because my whole family has been in the AF. Why did I join? Hmmmmm....I could give you a whole bunch of cheesy reasons but I'll tell you the main reason why. I thought the military would be good for me. I was spoiled rotten and completely irresponsible and headed down the wrong road. I knew it was only a matter of time before I got myself into serious trouble. The military seemed like a great avenue to escape all of the bullshit I was getting into and it was. It was the best thing I could have done for myself and I absolutely love my job. Spatula 0 #7 March 28, 2005 Not taking college seriously. I was 19 upon enlistment. Went to the Marine recruiter first. Had a very bad incident which involved a female recruit. She was treated horribly, and some things were said to her by the recruiter that I couldn't take. So we both went to the Air Force recruiter and joined up. Best decision of my life. AF offers more oppurtunites, better training, more responsiblitiy, better standard of living.....

USNLawdog 0 #10 March 28, 2005 Navy, I was 18. Why, because I wanted to do something for me. It was all my own decision noone else could make it for me and I was going to do what I wanted. I choose my branch because it was the only recruiter that didn't try to feed me a bunch of BS. He told me he didn't know something, but he would find out and get back to me with the info. He did, and I joined the Navy."I've taken the liberty of drafting your confession, you will be given a fair trial and then taken out back and shot." mcarchangel 0 #14 March 28, 2005 I originally joined because I had a bad home situation and would not have been able to realistically go to college otherwise without the G.I. Bill. I was 18 and the Army offered twice as much money at the other services for college. Well, except the Navy, and they wanted me to glow in the dark for the money. I actually really liked the Army, I did 13 years total, and am going back once I'm done with law school.------------------------------------------------------- "These are the old days, the bad days, the all-or-nothing days. slotperfect 7 #15 March 28, 2005 I had dropped out of college and was working two jobs. I had no car, and was living in a one room apartment. The Army recruiter called me saying that he was about to "purge my file" after two years (I took the ASVAB in high school), and asked if I would like to talk to him. I saw him the next day. He showed me a bunch of recruiting films, including jump school at Ft. Benning. From that point forward I was hooked on jumping out of airplanes. I had never seen anyone jump out of an airplane before, except in James Bond movies, and one episode of CHiPs. I was not interested in the Marine Corps . . . they had bugged me to death close to high school graduation even though I had told them more than once I was going to college. The Navy life at sea was familiar to me - one of my best friends enlisted and did 20 years as a Submariner, and his Dad had been a 20+ year Submariner as well. Life at sea didn't appeal to me. The Air Force didn't call, and the Army Recruiter was a great guy - a straight shooter that told me 100% truth. So I chose the Army. After my physical was complete I enlisted as a 43E, Parachute Rigger (now 92R). I was on delayed entry for three weeks, then shipped out on 01 May 1984. I was 19. I enlisted for 4 years to get the healthy college money and enlistment bonus available at the time. Once I was in, I loved the life and decided after about 2 years to make it a career. I'm about a month away from my 21 year anniversary in the Army. I plan to do 3 more and retire. I already have my smock and my flashlight for my new career as Night Greeter at Wal Mart. DrunkMonkey 0 #17 March 28, 2005 QuoteWhat was your initial reason for joining the military? How old were you, where were you in your life, and what made you choose your branch? They paid for College before I went in, and made me an Officer. Was 17 when I decided, 18 when I went in. The Navy took 6 months to say no, the AF said yes inside of 6 weeks. The quality of life in the Army and Marines did not seem too good. [Edit] And I was not 6' tall, the minimum for the Coast Guard, so you can walk home after your boat sinks... Had a wife and new-born baby son to leave behind... Once I got my draft notice, all the service recruiters started hounding me.
