A Blizzard in Albuquerque??

Recommended Posts

We just got 5" of snow...In fucking New Mexico! WTF?

Although, having learned to drive in Chicago winters, it was fun watching soccer moms put their Hummer H2s into the wall like Dale Earnhardt after a Dear John letter.

Hell, I'm driving a RWD Mustang 5.0, and I made it to work on time and in one piece... I saw more SUV wrecks than any other vehicle...

News flash: If you see 2" of standing slush on the road, take the car out of gear, take your foot off the gas, and hold onto the wheel with both hands.

New Mexicans really don't know how to drive in the snow...

Neither do Texans...luckily my dad grew up in Minn. and he took me out during the occasional snow storms we got in N. TX growing up and taught me how to drive on the snow.

Whats worst are folks in the desert trying to drive when its kind of barely raining. WOW! scary.

I believe it, and it fucked me up, I got sent home from work today because it screwed up the chain from Alberquerque to Amarillo, to Ok City all the way up here in St. Louis.

It's not that odd, last time I drove thew Flagstaff AZ it was blizzarding.

As for the SUVs in the wall, I don't think it matters where you live cause here in CO they do the same thing. Of course I learned to drive in ND so that may be why I've kept all 4 wheels on the road.

dude, seriously, no kidding! They just opened I-25 so I'm on my way to Santa Fe to try to pick up my stranded Dad! Wish me luck! (It's not me I'm worried about, but like you said, the other friggin drivers!! They don't right right in regular weather!)

Really, it's not that uncommon. ABQ is at 5,000 ft above sea level...what do you expect? :P

This late in the year, though...kinda weird.

People in the East Mountains know how to drive in snow. We tried to stay away from everyone else....

There was a spot on 9News before you moved to CO discussing the fact that there were so many SUV wrecks during snowfalls. Their non scientific findings were that most of the accidents were former residents of CA or TX (e.g. induhviduals who would not have a lot of 'snow' experience).

My un-scientific therory is that SUV drivers think that just cause they have 4 wheel drive it means they also have 4 wheel stop. :P

As to CA drivers, Sunday on the way back from snowboarding, we passed a driver with CA plates that had chains on the car. Now that isn't that bad cause the roads weren't great, but the fact that they were doing 60 mph down the road was a bit scary. :S

Same here. SUV owners think their vehicles are better in the rain and snow, and thus don't slow down. Of course, with their vehicles being somewhat topheavy, they handle more poorly and are more likely to roll when they hit a curb going sideways at 30mph.

I remember driving up to Alta in a storm one year. We had rented a Subary Legacy 4WD with snow tires and were in a long line of cars, trucks and buses. As we got higher and the road got curvier we saw more and more cars, SUV's and trucks stuck in the snow by the side of the road or stopped, the driver struggling with chains or whatnot. When we got to the parking lot the only vehicles left were the buses (who had done this before) and a line of Subaru Legacys.

I'd say that the right kind of 4x4 is better in rain and snow...IF its driven correctly. That's a VERY BIG if.

I grew up in Alabama and have no trouble driving in the snow. We had a mix of freezing rain and snow this morning and everyone was freaking out wrecking everywhere. (The air temperature was 39.) The radio was putting everyone in a panic, people were driving 35mph on the INTERSTATE. Its fun blowing by someone who is doing 35 and I am doing 75, just a little scary thinking that they could pull over in front of me. (I can hear the thought process, "Oh, someone is catching up with me, I better get in their way.) Anyway, even when it rains around here people forget how to drive, add a little slush and they become complete idiots.

I remember driving to work during a blizzard in my '87 Cutlass Salon V-8 .307 with RWD without any problems. It was only 19" inches of snow, so a pretty lame blizzard by our standards. I made the 11 mile trip without a problem (side streets were not plowed yet). No one that owned an SUV made it in:D

No kidding. I'm in PA. We get a lot of bad winters, but people forgot how to deal with it since SUV's became popular.

PEOPLE!

Even though you have 4-wheel-drive, don't forget that you're still driving on ice!!!!

Exactly, AD!

I drive a Wrangler, and I explain it like this:

With 4WD, you can go out when other vehicles can't. That doesn't mean you can drive the same as when it's not snowing. BE CAREFUL!!
