SpeedRacer 1 #28 March 14, 2005 there are similar laws in the USA for refusing a breathalyzer. anyway.... I am American, but I have been in a similar situation. I don't know about the UK, but here in Maryland, USA, they found that the cops were pulling people over who wereslightly over the limit, but it wasn't cost-effective to jail all these people if they hadn't been involved in an actual accident. So instead they have a policy where you have to go to these classes where they teach you about alchohol abuse & drunk driving etc etc. You gotta pay for these classes yourself, of course. Then they put your case on the "stet docket" which means that you have to not commit anymore crimes for the next year, or the DUI will come back up & be prosecuted. Now, this only happens for FIRST TIME offenders. The reasoning: well, there's a lot of people out there who are GENERALLY decent, law-abiding people who have gone out to a party & had a drink or two too many, and maybe we can just put the fear of god into them so they won't do it again, and then we don't clog up the legal system but still rehabilitate these generally-decent people who are, by their nature, re-habilatate-able. So just slog through this experience & learn from it. Next time you got friends from town & you wanna go out drinking, do it at a pub within walking distance. That's one problem that I have with America: the whole suburban thing where the houses are not within walking distance of the pubs!! bob.dino 1 #30 March 14, 2005 Not a bad idea. Here in Australia, where everything is just as spread out outside the inner city, light beer is really popular. Light beer is not lower in calories; it's lower in alcohol. Usually about 2.5%. And there's charts in each pub that show what you can drink and still stay under the limit. In addition, it takes 3.5 years (or 3 years if you're over 25) to get an unrestricted licence and while you're on the restricted licence your BAC must be zero. No alcohol. Period. It seems to work for keeping younger drivers safe. Not to say the system here is ideal, but it's got some good points.

unformed 0 #32 March 14, 2005 Quote This advice was given to me by several lawyers....just glad no one was hurt . That's the same advice given to me by an ex-cop. He said that when they pull you over they have no evidence on you. If you fail a breathalyzer, you're f*cked. If you walk and stumble, they have it on video and you're f*cked. If you refuse cooperation, you'll get arrested and taken to jail, and then they'll video you in jail answering some questions. That's the only evidence they have against you, and since you're just leaning against a wall, you can probably pass off being sober, and a jury will let you go. You'll lose your for six months for not cooperating, but it's no DUI. Then you go into the DMV, say, look, I need to be able to drive to work, I didn't get a DUI, blah blah, and they'll say, ok, you can drive to work and home ... and you've esentially gotten your driving priveleges back. Edit: I'm catching up on the thread. I am in Florida, so that makes sense. This ad space for sale.

I'm walking distance from about six different bars, sucks though that those aren't the ones I like going to.This ad space for sale.

Rather then trying to beat the system, just follow the rules. Don't drink and drive. There is a reason they have laws about drunk drivers. If someone is drunk and gets behind the wheel of a car and drives, IMO, they deserve every thing they get.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.
