Where can I get a bullet-proof vest?

Recommended Posts

Seriously. [:/]

My friend's brother is deploying and the Army may not have enough vests to go around, so she and her sister are trying to get one for him.

Best way to go about doing this? I have no clue. What does a new one cost?

Clicky It doesn't get much better than Second Chance.

Cost is gonna depend on the size and the NIJ level of the vest.... for similar protection to the stuff the army is getting (can't remember the name) you're looking around Level IIIA or up, which gets costly...

ok first here is what you want
you want to get him a vest that in comfortable in hot or cold weather. plus you want it to be able to stand up to wear and tear in a desert enviroment.
he would also need attachment points for his gear if you give me a bit i will find a good site for you to go to. for what he might need.

oh yeah i was there in 2003 so i know what i am talking about

I have an out-of-date level III he can have. It has the big trauma plate, too, I think.

It's expensive until the day you get shot.

Streichers has been around forever, but there are other suppliers out there. They even have a budget line, which would probably be OK, since the threat levels are standardized.

eBay

Search for:

"body armor"
"bulletproof vest"
"bullet proof vest"

If you want it for a combat scenario, you want a level IIIA. I believe most of the military guys use the Point Blank Interceptor. It's a high dollar vest. If you buy one online, make sure it comes with the options, like collar and groin protection. The military issue Point Blank Interceptors have optional rifle plates that are designed to stop rifle fire (kevlar alone won't stop rifle fire), but these are usually expensive and hard to find. I don't believe the soldiers use the plates unless they're in a very hot area because they are bulky and heavy and cumbersome. If you need accessories (like rifle plates) you can't find online, bulletproofme.com has a good selection. Be sure and ask the age and history of any body armor you buy used. Well worn body armor starts to loose its effectiveness. Also, body armor that has ever been saturated in water will loose its effectiveness. Remember, "fragmentation vests" and "flack jackets" are not the same as bulletproof vests--They are very low rated body armor (like 1A, I believe). I'm sure someone with some military or law enforcement experience can chime in and offer some other suggestions. Good luck.

trust me the vest that i gave the link to works

i have had three friends and many more Marine brothers and sister that will swear by it

three of my close friends were saved by these vest and plates . one of them took 8 rounds from an AK-47 in the chest and only on went about a quater inch through the plate. so don't look at any of those cop vest or anything just go with the military type vest cause they are test to make sure that they work and do their jobs

Thank you all so much!! I knew if I asked there would be plenty of you in-the-know to tell me.

I've forwarded the links to her.

no offense guys but most of that body armor won't hold up to the rounds they use over seas.

You have to understand the purpose of body armor in a combat situation. Mostly, you want it to protect against shrapnel, but it doesn't hurt to have something that can stop a .44 magnum or 9mm sub-machinegun rounds, just for a little added protection. Plus, you can add rifle plates to a IIIA vest to create level IV protection, and that WILL[/B][/I] stop most of the rounds they use overseas.

Note: I'm not military, ex-military, law enforcement, or ex-law enforcement. My experience comes solely from selling survival gear online, so you might want to check my advice against someone with some practical experience.

First off, before you spend any money I think you need to realize there is NOT a shortage of personell body armor for Army units at this time. There was a point in time where it was a shortage item. That is no longer true nor the case currently. What is being perpetuated is a rumor and nothing more.

Second issue. Just because you buy it doesn't mean your loved one will be able to wear it. There is a thing, especially in the regular Army, called uniformity and it means everyone has to look the same.

Finially, you have gotten a lot of advise here from well intentioned people but the Armor you need in a combat environment where AK rounds are flying is going to require not only soft armor but the hard armor plates as well. Bottom line is unless you get hit in one of the plates, an AK round will go through ANY soft armor out there like butter.

If you decide to go ahead and buy Armor for your loved one you should expect to spend any where from a 1-2K for a complete system, because thats what the level of armor your loved one will need. I will second what has already been said here and that is if you want unquestionable quality that is battle proven choose Paraclete Body Armor. It's what I wear every day here and it's what just about everyone in the know wears. I suggest you give them a call or an E-mail
http://www.paracletearmor.com/Vests/RAV0019.htm and explain your situation. You will be taken care of of that I am positive.

Thanks Scott!

I already told her to check into what the regs and specs were - I'd hate to see them spend that kind of dough only to find out he can't use it.

I'm not sure why they don't think he'll be armored. She just said he didn't think they'd be able to get him one.

I'll pass this info along to her as well.

Thanks for the pic - stay safe! :)

The vests posted by others could be effective against AK and other 7.62 rounds, as long as they chose Level III or Level IV. (these either tend to or always have ceramic or metal back up plates)

Brands matter less than protection level
(of course you want a known, proven brand)
