Vallerina 2 #1 March 8, 2005 About a year ago, I tried going to several schools for martial arts and whatnot around the Chicago area. They were all highly recommended, so I figured that I was getting good training. However, I didn't like it. To me, it just feels really weird. I especially felt awkward wrestling with male strangers. Something about the maneuvers with someone I have no problems with just made me feel uneasy. So, I'm always just a little curious about people who like to do it. Many people that I know that enjoy it aren't full of rage or anything like that. Afterall, it's a sport like anything else. I imagine that a lot of the enjoyment comes from winning and seeing yourself improve. However, this is just a simple question for those of you who enjoy it: what do you like about it? Is that uneasy feeling normal? Does it really just come naturally to some? And, how do you fight a good friend? Okay, I just got curious, that's all! GeordieSkydiver 0 #5 March 8, 2005 Having the ability to fight can help bolster ones own self confidence in other areas too. It can relax you and help you deal with stressful situations better. Amanduh 0 #7 March 8, 2005 LOL I get my ass whooped everytime I try to wrestle. But men are naturally stronger... The only advantage I ever had was being able to ball myself up into weird positions to get out of a pin.
freeflir29 0 #8 March 8, 2005 QuoteI actually fight less, now I know how to.. No doubt........they just asked when the last time I was in a "Non-work related" physical altercation in a psych interview. I really can't remember. I tend to walk away because I know I could put the idiot out in a second or two.
Stumpy 284 #9 March 8, 2005 I reckon its a personal space thing. I used to be quite heavily into aikido and it does take some getting used to. How often are you that close to someone with that much contact?! (actually i don't know you so you don't have to answer that!!!) Give it time tho and you kind of forget about that when you start becoming more worried about how well you are doing and competition then you start forgetting about that sort of stuff.Never try to eat more than you can lift

I took Tae Kwon Do for 4 years with friends of mine. We had no problem fighting each other because it is in a controlled enviroment. Ocassionally we got hurt sure, but we knew that it was just an accident. The satisfaction came from becoming stronger and the knowledge that if I needed to defend myself, i could. What type of martial arts school were you going too? Judo? That would be a grappling, wrestling one. If you want something with less wrestling, try tae kwon do or perhaps Kung Fu. Edit to add: I agree with Bouda, capoeria is frickin awesome and a very good workout. Alot more like dancing. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. cbain 0 #23 March 8, 2005 I was in Martial Arts for 3+ years. I had a black belt in Taekwondo and was also studying JuJitsu. When first starting out is does feel weird hitting other people when sparring. But you're wearing gear and they're wearing gear and you're not trying to hurt them. As you get better then you have better control and can keep the contact as light or as heavy as you want. There was also a few women at the same level or slightly higher than me so often times we were paired up. Then I got to the point where I was pretty good and wanted more of challenge and would pair myself up more with anyone I thought was better than me and gender didn't matter. I didn't get into any grappling until much later and I was already friends with everyone in the class and was more comfortable with them. For me I started out in it to get in shape and boy did I ever! But then I let it get to the point where that's the only thing I was ever doing. I'd go straight to the dojo from work, teach a class or two and then take 2-3 more classes then go home and work out or rollerblade more and I was doing that everyday. It was the physical and mental training/challenge that I liked, pushing myself to limits I thought I would never reach. Then I started skydiving. I've thought about getting back into it as I've moved a few times and it's been a few years but who I am has changed so much that it doesn't appeal to me like it used to. livendive 8 #24 March 8, 2005 I wrestled 11 seasons (in a span of 8 years) and liked it. It boosted my self-confidence and is handy enough in your average streetfight (especially when combined with other "techniques") that I was able to fall back to being a bouncer when I couldn't find other work. I think the attraction is just fitness level and the lure of being a victor, but with the added testosterone of it being "fighting" instead of just beating someone at a video game or non/light-contact sport.
