Did you grow up there? Steve Babin I sure did. I lived with my parents on the foot of Monte Sano Mountain. We watched the 1973 tornado go right up the mountain and over. Big one too. It had an eerie glowing green color at night. I've never forgotten it. Now the 1989 tornado, I was in college in Rochester, NY at the time, and I can remember having strange vibes that day. Then the phone rings, and it's my mom saying "we're all right." For some reason, I just blurted out, "what, did a tornado hit?" Yup... so I turn on the TV to the Rochester station, and there it is, all the carnage in Huntsville shown across the country. If I remember correctly, the 1973 tornado was an F4, and the 1989 tornado was an F5, and I remember it killed 24 (or thereabouts) people in about a one mile long path at rush hour. I was also in Birmingham, AL when the Pleasant Grove F5 tornado hit in 1998 (I think), and some 34 people died. I was a good ways away and didn't see that one though, but a couple of friends got hit by it. I forgot to mention a storm that hit Birmingham's southside area right when I was visiting a friend who was doing some rigging work on my gear. This was in 1996. My friend had an apartment next to the Charlie Boswell golf course, and that afternoon the skies got real dark at 1 pm, and my friend heard the warning sirens blaring, we got inside and just heard a roar for 30 seconds. We stayed away from the windows though because it was so loud. When it got quiet, we went outside, and there were pine trees blown down or snapped like toothpicks all over the golf course, some just mere feet from my car! They couldn't confirm that it was a tornado, but there were wind and tree damage throughout the neighborhood. Trees on houses, across roads and crushed cars everywhere. There was a $50,000 brand new Mercedes car crushed by an oak tree at the next apartment building. The owner had just bought it the day before and had not acquired insurance for it! Sheesh.
