RoadRash 0 #39 March 2, 2005 I was a vegetarian for 5 years...Lost a ton of weight at the beginning...and then once my activity level dropped...I gained 15 pounds... I started eating meat again about 2 years ago...really focusing on nutrition...have recently lost weight and have been eating better now than I have probably since I was a baby... Anyway, most vegetarians don't eat the way they should...and lack the right amount and type of protein...Guess that's why a friend of mine who had a miscarriage (and who is a strict veggie) had to start eating meat...... ~R+R...I like Meat Pies 'cause their meaty!!!...~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Fly the friendly skies...^_^...})ii({...^_~... Jumpervint 0 #43 March 2, 2005 Yeah, that means I eat eggs and use dairy products. Although the idea of drinking milk freaks me out anymore and I've switched to soymilk - Silk. linny 1 #45 March 2, 2005 I've been Vegetarian or Vegan (on and off between the two) since I was 12 (half my life)..... and I've never thought a thing of it. It's definitely not weird to me or any of my friends (Most of whom are, or were, veggie at some point) Not until I began to skydive, did people start giving me shit and calling me "one of them weird vegetable eaters"... I find this soooooooooo strange. 9 or 10 years ago I would have initiated a hardcore ethical debate about animal rights and liberation, quite possibly leading to a blow-out argument. I've chilled out a lot since then and wouldn't even think twice to give someone shit for eating meat or questioning why I don't. My question is, though, why can't the majority of the population just accept and respect the vegetarian point of view, especially if it's not thrown in their face in an elitist fashion? Just curious here folks. I'm definitely not trying to start an animal rights debate. I'm just trying to find out why there's so much disrespect engulfing this lifestyle choice. craddock 0 #46 March 2, 2005 QuoteMy question is, though, why can't the majority of the population just accept and respect the vegetarian point of view, especially if it's not thrown in their face in an elitist fashion? I find this not to be the case. At least not among those that are vegetarian because of animal rights. In my experience they tend to engage in conversations about hunting and other animal rights issues that leave a very bad taste in my mouth.(unlike meat) What cracks me up is vegetarians that don't want to eat the poor animal but will eat fish. Nothing dies a slow horrible death as does a fish. It takes many hours for them to slowly suffocate once out of the water and then they still live for a bit after they have been completely filleted. Have you ever seen a walleye that is just head and spine still breathing and trying to move with no muscle left? If your going to give up meat for animal rights reasons, fish should be toward the top of the list. That spot isn't bad at all, the winds were strong and that was the issue! It was just on the downwind side.

My question is, though, why can't the majority of the population just accept and respect the vegetarian point of view, especially if it's not thrown in their face in an elitist fashion? I with you on the length of time of being a vegetarian...turned over my leaf when I was 15...haven't looked back. Do get the odd chide from other jumpers for being "the vegan", or for eating my "rabbit food". My counter-question to you, though, is why can't a majority of the VEGETARIAN population accept that not everybody who refuses to eat meat is in for the 'rights' of the animal?? I gave up eating meat for health reasons, and to cut a long story short - taste. Don't get me wrong, I still love the smell of good BBQ ribs slow-cooked with lots of sauce, but I can't stand that stringy taste that meat leaves you with. Yet, when you talk to another a vegetarian - they almost always automatically go off on a 'rights' tirade. Now, I'm not FOR abusing the animals, but hell - with the worlds population at present...we farm animals the same way we farm vegetables...why is it any different to eat a stem of broccoli grown in a field en masse than it is to eat a cow grown in a field (or pen, or what-have-you) en masse? It's not like they're born with any hopes other than being killed an eaten...much like the vegetables aren't ever grown with any more hope of "living the good life" (you know...growing old...marrying a beautiful cauliflower...raising cute little florets together in a nice grove with a tree) I guess this is a nothing post, but if you don't criticize what I eat/do - then I won't feel obliged to do the same....and the same goes for OTHER VEGETARIANS!! My Dad's meat 'rule' - knock it on the head, cut the horns off & serve. "hey - this cow's been in the sun...it's over cooked!" Kahurangi e Mahearangi, Kiwi, RB #926, AFF-I, FAA Snr. If your going to give up meat for animal rights reasons, fish should be toward the top of the list. This is a genius reply. Vegetarians also tend to neglect the fact that when grains and vegatables are harvested by farm machinary, the rodent population within the field is usually 50% destroyed. So even in the gathering of vegetarian foods, animals are killed. Unless you are eating all hand-picked organic foods (try to get hand picked wheat), you are most likely helping to kill animals. No matter what happens, when people eat, some animals die. In any case, the vegatarians and vegans at my DZ are not the kind that go on animal rights tirades. They don't eat meat, but they never complain that we do. In turn, I never complain that they don't. And we all hold hand and sing. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.
