Teaching your baby to sign

Recommended Posts

My niece learned to sign as a baby. It was pretty neat seeing that she could communicate even though she couldn't use her voice.

On Saturday, my son actually mimicked something for the first time with his hands. It was so neat. Upon seeing that, I figured he's ready to learn some simple sign language (i.e., milk, more, pain) to let us know more of what's going on.

Anybody else have some experience with this? I personally think it's a pretty neat thing, and at the very least it'll allow him to communicate with us in ways other than crying.

Oh yeah I know about this. Rather then typing it all out again, see here.

There is a story there about how I taught both my hearing boys to sign. It's really too bad that they didn't keep up with it.

I've taught a few signs to my grandson. That way from across the room or at the table, I can tell him to "eat" without anyone hearing it! I've also taught him other signs as well. We also taught our dog sign language for sit, stay, come, etc. They pick up really fast!

Signing is awesome. Proof that we all need the ability to communicate with something other than our mouths.

The deaf community is awesome! I've been working with someone who is deaf for over a year, and he started teaching me ASL along with my fiance' and I am glad I started to learn. Its so easy too, just a quick motion of your hand and thats it.

I'll just give some anecdotes why you should learn ASL.

My fiance' and I were bowling. I was at the counter and she was bowling (maybe 50' away), she wanted pepsi but they were out so I just signed "no pepsi" to which she said "D P" and that was it. So I turned and orderd a Dr. Pepper. Now if we didn't know ASL I either would have had to given up my spot in line, walk over, tell her, get what she wanted, go back and stand in line.... or order something and it be wrong.

Also a few weeks ago with the "mutant cold" my voice was almost non existant because of coughing for 2 weeks so I just signed everything to my fiance' who translated if needed. Instead of me fighting my body to speak and hurting even more.

My boys sign 'more', 'eat', 'stop', 'finished', 'go', 'baby' (<--that one is soooo cute! ;)) and a few others.

They either understand these or can sign them. It is the only communication they have, but it's great for typical-developing kids as well.

I have taught some ASL to all three of my kids. They pick up on it really quick. I had read somewhere that kid more adaptive to language then adults so the earlier you expose them to other lanuage the easier it is for them to learn it. My kids have also picked up on french and spanish. It is fun to see them get exited when they learn a new word and start using it. Now I just gotta find a lanuage they will mind me in ;)
