MP3 Players

Recommended Posts

I know absolutely nothing about these little gizmos other than my son wants one for his birthday, so now I have to investigate them. I'm hoping you all can answer a few questions before I go shopping for one.

Basically, it's so you can download music from the internet and carry it around, right? (I told you I know nothing! :P)

Is an iPod just a brand name for a MP3 player? Why is it the hot thing?

What are the most important attributes I need to look for? Anything NOT important that a salesperson will try to get me to spend money on?

Is there a good unit under $150? (Being a teenager, I'm assuming he's going to misplace it or it will be stolen at some point.)

Is Spyware still an issue at some downloading sites? What is a good site to use?

Please talk to me like you would talk to your mother about electronics and computers. All the techie talk confuses me.

You can download music, or rip (take your music from CD's to your hard drive) your CD's to your PC and put them on the MP3 player.

Apple makes the IPOD. Opinions differ on it, I don't like it. Too expensive and not enough options. It doesn't even have an FM radio. I like small compact players. I have a SANDISK 512 meg player, love it!

Attributes....that's up to you and him....what will he use it for. Again opinons come into play here.

There are a ton of players under 150....simple search @ Best Buy's website

www.bestbuy.com

Spyware isn't an issue on the player it self, that's something on your pc. I'm sure everyone will chirp in here shortly.

From what you said, I gather you just want a decent MP3 player that he can have to listen to some of his favorite songs on. Yes, there are many choices for a good, quality player that will do the trick just fine for under $150. iPod (brand name) now makes a $99 version called the Shuffle that would work. The Original Apple iPod is quite elaborate and pretty amazing, but will also set you back quite a bit more that $150. And you certainly wouldn't want it misplaced or ruined. I have used and seen many different types and brands (I am the guy that everyone gives their electronics to when the can't figure something out) and one of the nicest, easy to use, MP3 players I have found is the Sandisk. You can pick up the 256MB (about 60 songs) player for like $89 now. The one player for under $100 that I have seen repeated problems with is the YEPP.

As far as sites for music go, there are also MANY to choose from. Stay with the big names that have data bases and libraries. ie: Napster, iTunes. Do NOT use a file sharing site if you are worried about Spyware and such. The sites that are all "free" are the ones to stay away from.

I can answer more questions if you want to PM me.:)

Yep! You obviously know something!!! You can also convert any cd's into MP3 files and it makes them much more portable. eg. i have somewhere in the region of 200 albums downloaded onto my ipod.

yes - ipod is the apple brand. they are very stylish and well designed and no other manufacturer has one that beats it yet on all fronts, some have better battery life, some have better sound quality.... but as a complete package, the ipods are right up there

Depends.... your main attributes are:
storage, this can range anywhere from 10's of songs worth, to 60Gb plus - which will ptake 100's of hours worth of music
Portability - this tends to go hand in hand with storage - less storage = smaller unit
Battery life - some of the early apples including mine had issues with this but i think its sorted now.
Looks - personally i think you can't beat the apples but some of the new sonys are pretty slick amongst others
i am sure there are lots of features the salesman will try and sell you... but most players have similar functionality

Not familiar with US prices, but at this price point you are probably looking at one of the smaller players. am sure someone from the US will chime in here.....
(having said that, a friend of mine got an ipod shuffle in NY, and its a nice bit of kit)

I pod's are cool but there are others ive heard that the napster mp3 player is a good buy and as far as downloading seems that napster again would be your best bet for that
its like 15 bucks a month for unlimited downloads

if you dont want to pay a monthly charge
i tunes = a buck a song

think about what kind of budget you will set for him

if he is alowed to download 15 songs a month then go with napster
if he will be happy with a few songs a month the use i tunes

hope that all clicks with u :P

Yep. You can also take any CD`s you already have and "Rip" them (Convert them to MP3 files) so that you can put the songs on your MP3 player.

Yep, Ipod is a Brand Name. The Ipods are so because of great Marketing and the fact that they were first to deliver a quality product.

First is to decide on how much storage you want. Then decide on what other features you want.

[Reply]Is there a good unit under $150? (Being a teenager, I'm assuming he's going to misplace it or it will be stolen at some point.)

I bought my 13 year old daughter this one. . It hold about 100 songs, Plays Both MP3 and WMA files, Has a Built in Radio that you can record from and alot of other features. She loves it and is rarely seperated from it.

I bought myself an Ipod Mini. It Holds over 1000 songs but will not Play WMA songs and is not compatible with Napster or any site that downloads WMA Files.

If you buy an Ipod, You are stuck with using iTunes. I mistakenly "BOUGHT" songs from other sites and spent 2 days trying to figure out how to get those songs on my iPod. It was a real Pain.
With any other MP3 player, You can use just about any site such as iTunes, Napster, Music Match or any others. I am not real happy with my iPod because of this.

Any "Free Download" sites will install Tons of Spyware and possibly get you Sued by RIAA.

Hi Andrea,

I have the Rio Forge MP3 Player. I got it because its expandable, allowing me to store differnet playlists on different memory cards that can be inserted easily. It also has a FM radio player (not great range, but it works) so when I'm at the gym and want to get a radio station, I can.

Its only $159 at Best Buy, and its rough and tough! I dorp it off the stairmaster and eliptical machine all the time :D Might be an option for you.

Do all the players use memory cards like that? Are they like what digital cameras use? Is it better to get a more expensive unit that holds more songs or to get a cheaper one and just switch out the cards?

They use the same cards that some digital cameras do (the cheaper ones anyway). The player I have is called a flash player - where ones like the IPOD are hard drive players. Dropping a hard drive player is a bad thing! So cost gets more if you have lots of cards, but on one 256 card (plus there is memory already built into the player) - I can get over 4 hours of music. I haven't put in another card for a few months now cause I like the mix I've got on my current card.

I've gotten memory cards on EBAY for cheap, but I have about 8 of them now - which I use interchangably between my MP3 player and my camera.

There are lots of things to look at. Since your son is in the HS age bracket, an IPOD would be more desireable as far as theft goes, and dropping them (IIRC he's into sports and stuff right?) could cause damage. I've dropped my Rio in the bathtub (after a day it was fine!) and off the exercise equipment at the gym and it keeps on going!

"Do all the players use memory cards like that?"

Some do, some use hard discs, like a computer.

"Are they like what digital cameras use?"

Yes, but there are many varieties of cards.

I was an early adopter of Sony's Atrac3 system about 5 years ago, which I think is better, so don't ask me.:S

Besides, I'd get an Archos over an Ipod anyday, just to confuse you even more.:D
Why limit yourself to sound when you can have video as well.B|

edit, what Jen says about flash cards vs hard drives and dropping them is probably good advice IMO.:)

MP3 players will either use memory cards or mini hard drives. The memory card players are smaller, but don't hold nearly as many songs as the hard drive players. Some MP3 players will also do FM broadcasting, so you can link the player into regular stereo systems(like your car stereo).

For storage space, figure each song takes about 5 to 6 MB of space and use that to calculate how many songs a certain player can store. Don't go off what they say(ie. xxx hours), because they'll often distort the numbers.

As far as functionality and ease of use, is a flash player or hard drive player more desireable? I really don't understand what the difference is. You guys are using that techie speak again now. Oh, and what's a WMA file?

If you are looking for cheap (as in cost, not quality) go with flash like mailin says. The flash cards are super cheap and being able to change them out is great. Think of them as really big CD's. So instead of carrying around 200 hundred CD's, you could carry 25...and at a much smaller size too.

Personally, I have a Dell DJ. It is cheaper than Ipod, does all the same stuff, and when the lithium battery finally dies (as they all do), it is easier to replace yourself. But that it is a hard disk player and a bit moore than $150. But then again, I have 1200 songs on it right now and still have 11 gigs to go!

On another note, I would go with iTunes for downloading music. Napster has a monthly subscription fee, but if you ever decide to cancel that suibscription, your music stops working. [:/]>:(

Also, there is a great piece of software called Mediamonkey which is very handy to burn already owned software. It uses the best mp3 encoder ( called LAME) and is very easy to use and is free.

Media Monkey

As far as ease of use, they are probably both similar....hard disk versus flash. The main difference is capacity.

WMA is microsoft's audio format.
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

"As far as functionality and ease of use, is a flash player or hard drive player more desireable?"

They are much the same sort of thingie.

WMA, is just an audio file type, similar to MP3, WAV etc. A bit like comparing JPG files and BMP files.

There are geeky differences, largely concerned with quality, vs file size etc. How old is the bairn? Is he clued up on this sort of thing?

Flash Player:
Pros - More durable. Less expensive
Cons - Dont hold as much.

Hard Drive Player
Pros - Hold ALOT more songs
Cons - Drop and it may never work again. More expensive.

For any Teenager, I would highly reccomend a Flash Player.

and what's a WMA file?

A WMA File is a Format that Microsoft supports for Downloading files.
MP3 - is a generic file format for songs.

WMA songs do not play on a Ipod (Apple) but play on almost all other MP3 Players.

Errr.... I don't think thats true. My friend uses WinMX with no problems. you still use iTunes as the interface but i'm fairly sure you download the music straight into the iTunes files.

Both flash cards and hard drive players usually act like drives on your computer. Especially with flash cards, it is just a matter of grapping a music file from your computer and dragging it to the flash card. Also, the flash reader is often USB which means that you plug it in and Windows finds and installs it for you.

In other words, it should not be too hard. :)
Oh yeah, Napster does have a thing called Napster lite which is like iTunes. Just stay away from the monthly subscription if you want to keep your music. ;)

I have a teenager, I pod was a must, all the rest is simply not cool, apple has a good service with it, they come in many shapes and sizes, personalized or not and now in cute colors in the mini iPod version.
We are victims of what is cool or not, and obviously all the other brands at this point are shit in the eye of the teen consumer.
The new product is called iShuffle it's very cheep, same cool factor, much smaller, less capacity but it it an Apple product, so it's still very "cool".

I had to get a pink mini iPod for my daughter... I would love to borrow it but the damn thing is pink, see now i am a victim too, I just might have to go get a... silver one. the mini is nice it fits in any little pocket, like jumpsuit pocket ;)

Well I made the mistake of Going to Napster and Paying for about 10 songs a $1 each. Downloaded them and then discovered that there no way put them on my iPod because they were WMA Files. They could not be converted to Mp3 because they were "Rights Managed".

I am sure you can download songs from WinMX or anywhere else as long as they are MP3`s and still put them on your ipod but sites like Napster and many others usually send WMA files.

I have not yet found a way to convert legally obtained (Purchased) WMA files to get them on a iPod with out Burning them to a CD and then Ripping them back off in MP3 Format. If any could tell me a better way I would greatly appreciate it.

I ask because I know how to transcode some of this stuff, but I wouldn't like to try and explain it without pictures, visual aids, and waving my hands about a lot.:)
Sounds like a flash card solution would be best for you and the lad.

take your itune songs burn them to a regular cd, then re-import them in iTunes, it alows you to make MP3 then, it's a waist of time and a few CDs, but it works.
