akurtom 0 #1 February 16, 2005 Ok...I am a fulltime student and I work two jobs. When I got these jobs two years ago, it wasnt a problem the way I filled out my w-4 forms since I didnt work that many hours. This tax season, I was expecting a huge tax return. Didnt happen... I owe the government fucking $4000 because apparently I didnt get enough taken out of my checks. Dear IRS----you suck! Did anyone else have this problem? How was I supposed ot know? I'm still in school.... I plead the fifth. of SoGo :-) Blue Skies
BGill 0 #2 February 16, 2005 yeah you're definitely not able to still write exempt with the amount you make.... still, $4000 seems a bit high for what you owe unless it includes previous moneys that you owed as well
PurpleWill 1 #3 February 16, 2005 Hope you can find a way not to have to pay, otherwise you can always sell a kidney. Thats a nasty surprise. There is a lot of stuff worth doing but then there is a lot of stuff worth doing instead.
NWFlyer 2 #4 February 16, 2005 Sorry that you're stuck with a huge tax burden - have you tried using TurboTax online? I think you can go through the entire return without filing for free and it *might* help you catch any errors/missed opportunities for tax savings. For next year, it might be useful to use this calculator. Ideally, your goal should be to end the year neutral with the IRS - nothing owed, no refund. Refunds feel nice when you get them, but you are essentially giving the IRS an interest-free loan all year. http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96196,00.html"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. skymama 37 #5 February 16, 2005 QuoteHow was I supposed ot know? I'm still in school.... Well, your profile says you're a Research Analyst. I suppose you could have researched the tax laws on the internet to make sure you were getting enough withheld. meltdown 0 #6 February 16, 2005 Dude, that sucks. How did you figure your taxes? I used TaxCut, but the result I got was not what I expected (owing $1200.00), so I did them free with the Turbotax link to the IRS web site, and voila, now I only owe $127.00. I would double check your figures - $4000 is a lot to owe, and if it's true, you'll probably get hit with an underpayment penalty too.
akurtom 0 #7 February 16, 2005 I went to H&R block...which now I feel like a jack@ss because I owe them money too for the tax return... Blue Skies
rehmwa 2 #8 February 16, 2005 1 - sucks, good luck getting it worked out 2 - welcome to the adult world - planning ahead is important, being a student isn't an excuse for anything 3 - $4000 seems like a lot to be off, hopefully someone made a mistake and you can fix it in your favor 4 - Owing $4000 means you had the use of that money instead of the government for the year - handled wisely, it could have been to your benefit. Something to leverage for next year. ...
