Ok all you PC nerds help me out.

RAID 0 has exactly the same amount of error tolerance as a single drive. Well, actually exactly half since you have twice the amount of mechanical parts. Hence having a secondary standalone big drive for most storage. RAID 1 is just a waste of money unless you have a system that must always have access to its data (i.e. a mainframe server). If you have documents that you absolutely cannot lose, it's foolish to have them in a single location anyway. Backup, backup, backup. And there are many cheaper ways to back things up then a RAID 1 mirror. Striping is great for performance. Just dont use it for sensitive storage.

I feel the same way. Raid 0 & 1 for the average person is useless. If you have the cash, go Raid 5 with a Raid card and at least 5 hard drives of the same type.

With DVD backups and external USB and Network drives, there are much better ways to do backups.

Since I now have plenty of pictures I do not want to lose I am looking into some external storage. After working on computers all weekend I now have enough extra parts to build a nice file server and still have a few mobos to get creative with.

Then, I put two 1 GB Corsair XMS Series PC3200 DIMMs running DUAL CHANNEL in the exact same system my avg score only went up to 4929.

Have you found any benefit to having 2gig of PC3200 on a system? I saw a noticable differance from 512 to 1g...but I don't think the increase would be as great on an end-user system jumping up to 2gig.

I just want a machine that will let me play the games that are out right now and for maybe another year or two.

Have you considered buying a games console instead? Sure, you might not get the same variety or depth of games, but at least the software developers are forced to write to a fixed spec rather than forcing you to keep upgrading. I reckon that's going to be my strategy from now on.

Yeah, it's basically overkill. :S

Our Mainframe is RAID 5+1 ;)

Raid 1 just is'nt practical for anything thats mission critical since it takes hours to rebuild a drive. With the cheap price of hard drives RAID 1 only costs about $100 anymore to put into a system. A fast DVD burner is going to cost about that plus media costs.

With me caputring probally 15 hours of video, labeling it, and editing it this summer, PLUS the 1500+ pictures I'll probally catalog its just not reasonable to put the time into redoing it all just to save $30-$50. ;) My time is worth approx $30 an hour on contracts. :P

I'll be bringing a new PC up at home in a few months and it will be running 2 raid 1 arraysor possibly a Raid 0+1 array. One for the OS and one for the file storage. Coupled with a dual layer DVD burner it should assist in providing a 99.9999% uptime PC for me at home. Only thing it will go down for is to move it around or to add more hardware.

I had a PS2 and stoped playing it about a year before i sold it b/c the graphics on it sucked ass. plus i play alot of FPS games and those controllers just piss me off. The Xbox isn't much better. I will ALWAYS prefer computers over consoles.................you can't surf porn on consoles;);)

i heard that game was crap?

I enjoy it on the PC. That version is supposed to be better than the console version.

Right now it's gathering dust as I am only playing World of Warcraft. btw...I am now running that game at 1600*1200, 72hz refresh, Full AF, all details on, full terrain details and still averaging 70fps (even in Ironforge). I am running the AMD3200+ (Barton), 1gig of value select corsair PC3200 (set at optimal, not aggressive), BFG 6600GT OC, WD80GB ATA133 w/8mb (using the SATA rockethead adapter) on an Abit NF7-S Nforce2 mobo...and a 24 inch CRT monitor.

Yeah and a 24" CRT weighs about as much as I do...:o

I need extra support on my desk to hold it up. About to go dual mon with my 'small' 17" CRT. The great thing is that monitor was given to me by my bro in law B|

I watched T2 Extreme Edition on it this weekend in 1080p. Now that is high def!
