I've had a 20gb iPod for over 2 years and love the thing. The new ones...4th Gen and Minis are very nice compared to my 2nd gen model. They are easy to use, totally well integrated with iTunes software and very handy for moving video files and backing up my digital photos. having contact info and calendar info on it as well is a bonus.

A couple of days ago I asked my boss if I could get a small USB drive to do a daily backup of my files on ..... and now, amazingly enough, ;) Apple has come out with the Shuffle! Gosh, I wonder which flash drive I should get for those pesky data backups.......

Only complaint I hear about them is the batteries wearing out pretty quickly, as in within a couple of years. No personal experience, though.

I don't know anything about the Shuffle, but I love my iPod. Actually, I am in love with it. I got one for my birthday last year, and thought to myself, "If I ever lose this thing, that's it. It's too expensive to replace." Well, I thought I had lost it this summer, and was going crazy. I was immediately thinking of how I could come up with the money to replace it. I'm more addicted to my iPod than junkies are to heroin.

I've had two iPods. I love it. Let us know if you get a shuffle. I'm considering it as well.

I just listened to most of Steve Jobs' keynote address and the Shuffle looks like a very cool little device. You can also use it for data storage. You can specify how much of it you want to use for data files (in iTunes preferences) and if you use what they call "Autofill" iTunes will fill the rest of the space with a random selection of tunes from playlists or you can specify exactly what you want transferred. It uses USB 2 so the transfers will be fast on a USB2 equipped computer.

The player has a switch on the back that turns shuffling on or off so the player will play back tunes randomly or in the order you specified. This was inspired by the fact that the "shuffle" feature was so popular among iPod users. Definitely a different approach.

Other items from the address.....

The iPod market share on portable music players (flash and hard drive) went from 32% in Jan 2004 to 65% in Jan 2005. Apple sold 4,500,000 iPods in the holiday quarter...up from 733,000 in the holiday quarter a year previous. The iPod has spawned an industry that provides accessories for them...over 400 accessories are available. Competitors' hard drive based players went from 7% to 6% market share in the same time frame. The iPod mini definitely captured a lot of the high end flash market. Now they are aiming for the rest of the flash market.

Why? They are great pieces of technology produced and supported by an excellent company.

Do you know if it's possible to specify some number of songs, then have it autofill the rest with a random sampling? So I could always have my 5 favorites on there, but have the rest be random (or something like that)?

Tom,

That I don't know. My initial reaction is that I don't think so....but if enough people ask for that I'm sure the software will be updated accordingly.

One thing that stops me from getting one (shuffle) is there is no screen on it, nor an fm tuner....I just got a SanDisk for $79 that has an FM Tuner and 256 megs....love it.....small/compact and tuner...great for working out. I only use it for travel/working out, so small/compact is the first thing I look for versus capacity. 60+ songs is plenty for travel and w/o. Even the ipod mini is too much money in my opinion.

Or, you could get one of these and carry it in your wallet. B|

Tom,

I just picked up a Shuffle and can see how you can load an album or certain songs and then randomly fill the rest of the space.

First, you plug in the Shuffle, select it in iTunes and delete all the songs on it by selecting all of them using the Shift key and clicking on the first and last song.

Second,, You drag the songs you want to play first onto the iPod.

Third, you uncheck the box that says: "Replace all songs when autofilling"
and you click on the autofill button in iTunes.

When you remove the Shuffle to play, you use the slider switch on the back to play in order. When the songs you wanted to listen to first have finished, you move the slider to "Shuffle" or just listen to the rest in order.

First impressions...easy to use, good sound quality, light, small, great design and usability. Very nice.

Hey just curious to see if anyone here has an IPod and what they think of them. Apple just came out with a smaller version, a little smaller than a pack of trident gum :S and it's around $100. I'm thinking of getting one now.

http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/

I have an ipod and it is THE best think I have! Well, besides my rig ;);) If you're into music, a great investment and really fun! I think the mini for 100 is ok, but I would recommend the ipod. The mini ipods are nice and small, but you get more for your $$ if you get the 20GB which is a bit bigger...
Just my two cents! :)

YES! there are multiple ways to run through ANY stereo. Through an FM transmitter(quality will be as good as your best FM station) or through direct wiring. I havent used my cd player or auto changer since.

The IPOD has become my child. I never go anywhere without it. If you want to buy one, don't buy the mini or the shuffle because You will fill them b/f you know it.
I have the 4th gen. 20gb. but I wish I had the 40 gb. Well worth the cash.

BE ONE OF THE COOL KIDS... GET THE IPOD

We have 3... the 15 GB goes on the train to the city every day, the mini goes in the car with the itrip sending the signal to the stereo, and the shuffle for when we're walking around town. We have the airport express connected to the stereo so we can listen to the music with a little base. I use both the 15 and the mini as backup devices...
The shuffle is really, really nice... No need for the display.

There's so many more reasons to get the ipod that not to get the ipod.

Note to ANYONE with an ipod - ditch the standard headphones - they suck (and apparently you are now far more likely to get mugged with white headphones than black ones:S) and replace with some low end sennheisers or some such. the difference in sound quality is amazing! (i have a 2nd Gen one)

Have to agree here...i have 4th Gen 40gb...and this thing goes with me EVERYwhere. At home however i have my lappie attactched to the stereo...so i just use itunes and go that route. But I have an hour + commute to work on the train each way...and i work in a puter lab doing application development...so basically have this thing going almost 12 hours a day...and love it. In my car, since it is an old POS..i just have a tape deck adapter. :)
Edited to add: I hate the headphones it comes with....:D Had a pair already that totally rock!! ;)

Huh. Never thought of that. Makes sense, though.

I have the 40GB 3rd generation one and love it. Use it in my car on long trips (or when I want to pump myself up for a day of rockin' skydiving), at work with the iTrip (my co-workers are dazzled), at the DZ for when I want to relax or dubb to videos really easily), or a walk with my dog, Shimmano.

I use it occasionally as a HD for pictures, yet not being a 4th generation iPod I can't view the pictures that I have onboard without a computer.
