Cleaning a Flag

Recommended Posts

I have a flag from '83 that I want to put back up (indoors). It has been packed away for about 10 years and somewhere along the way something got spilled on it. The rest of it is just plain dirty. The cleaners won't touch it out of fear that they may damage it. Any thoughts?

what's it made out of?? cotton? poly blend???? i'd say some good detergent and the washing machine... if it is showing it's years and is pretty delicate, i'd say hand wash it in the tub or sink..........

Its very hard to clean a cotton flag. You might be able to spot remove the spill using a diluted bleach (on the white only, obviously) and a scrub brush. You might be able to use an oxyclean or similar on the other areas.

Eitherway, incase you didn't know, if you dispose of the flag, do not throw it away. Fold it properly and give it to your local American Legion. They'll retire the flag properly in a ceremony on Flag Day.

Bung it in the wash. What's the worst that could happen to it ? Hell, I've thrown my rig in the wash in the past.
