jumperconway 0 #1 February 9, 2005 Why do we donate $ hand over fist when there is a catastrophy somewhere outside of the US and do diddly when it happens on our own soil such as the hurricane disasters to Florida and the east coast last year? Is it because we just expect that everyone in the US has insurance and should be responsible for their own? We don't organize the same efforts for our own citizens? We feel that we are rich and the rest of the world can't take care of itself? This isn't pointing fingers or making a statement just asking a question that came up at the pub. Not to belittle the effort which I contributed to in Thailand. Just curious.
turtlespeed 221 #2 February 9, 2005 I agree, Conway - there is so much that matters. There is so much that needs help throughout the world - it seems to be a band wagon effect. I wish we could start a bandwagon for the JFTC calendar for the women that are going to be on the record dive. Last I heard there was a lot lacking in support. As I have stated before - I have a personal intrest into the research. Not trying to hijack - just thinking along the same lines - I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
GravityGirl 0 #3 February 9, 2005 I think we do donate for our own. The outpouring after 911 was in line with the Tsunami relief efforts. And I believe that there was plenty of donations after the hurricanes in FL. It's just that the lost did not compare with the Tsunami, so consequently the releif was also much smaller. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear! kelel01 1 #4 February 9, 2005 I agree with Bonnie, and I'll add this . . . I think we get more involved when there's a large loss of life, and the hurricanes just (thankfully) didn't have that kind of effect.
PhreeZone 20 #5 February 9, 2005 In terms of $ donated to research vs $ taken in JFTC has a horrible % taken out for expences. Only a very small porition of the money donated actually goes towards research. The amount of money donated after the hurricanes this year was about $50 million I heard. The Government backed that with hundreds of millions of aid too. Currently the donations from private causes is about on pace with those that went to FL.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
aerohaga 0 #6 February 9, 2005 You know, I wondered the same thing back when the tsunami stuff was on this board and I got the crap flamed out of me!For my part, I know nothing with any certainty, But the sight of the stars makes me dream. -Vincent Van Gogh
jumperconway 0 #7 February 9, 2005 I was talking to a friend last night who's mother's house in FL still has plastic sheeting on the roof because insurance hasn't come through yet. I know this is trivial in comparison to loss of life and homes/businesses/lively hoods.

boinky 0 #10 February 9, 2005 I was in Lake Wales, FL last weekend. You are right. It's amazing the amount of buildings that you see from the air that still have blue tarps on their roofs. Or businesses that still have no billboards or marquees. Insurance companies are all about collecting their payments promptly, but seem to be fairly complacent when it comes to the speed at which they settle some claims.Nina Are we called "DAWGs" because we stick our noses up people's butts? kelel01 1 #11 February 9, 2005 It might not be complacency, so much as it's the sheer volume of claims. Government assistance is probably still being distributed as well.

flyangel2 2 #13 February 9, 2005 Eric, I think Clint was talking about support and donations for the calendar project through Gaia's Rose. The money we are raising will cover the cost of the printing and shipping of the calendar. (Right now as it stand, Jen and I will have to cover the cost of the shipping) And it's not like we are just asking for people to donate, we are offering them some great items for their donations.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.
