Amanduh 0 #1 February 9, 2005 This is pretty funny. Yesterday there was a police chase here in Houston, and while the guys were being chased they were SMOKING A CRACK PIPE hahahaha Gotta love this town ABC13 Eyewitness News (02/08/05 - HOUSTON) Local police got their man after a long, winding high-speed chase through northern Houston. That high-speed chase lasted for nearly an hour as the driver weaved his way through Houston's side streets and neighborhood roads. For 45 minutes, the unidentified suspect kept police at bay, flying through the streets of city neighborhoods, striking at least four vehicles during the course of the chase. What concerned investigators most is what they saw him doing behind the wheel. "When he's driving, I can see him from the side view mirror that he's lighting up the crack pipe and he's smoking the pipe, which I did recover," said Officer Ricardo Rojas-Garcia with the Houston Police Department. The trouble started at around Main and Hogan. A patrolman running radar, according to police, went to pull the suspect over for speeding. He nearly ran the cop over instead. At one point, the passenger inside the fleeing vehicle bailed out and was taken into custody. Though it appears police could have stopped the chase sooner, the officers involved defended their actions and their decision to allow it to go on as long as it did. "When he would see a car, a civilian out here in the way, he would kind of gun the vehicle at it," said Officer Rojas-Garcia. "So he wasn't going to stop for anybody." The chase ended near Tidwell near Arlington when a delivery truck unknowingly helped police box in the white pickup. "I didn't do it to stop him from going anywhere or anything like that," said Brock Irvin, who was driving the delivery truck. "It was just the luck of the draw. He had no way to go to the right. He had to cut back to the left and that's when the police officer rammed him and stopped him." The driver of the pickup has been charged with possession of crack cocaine, felony evading arrest, and a charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer is now pending. While watching the chase in progress, you may have been wondering why the police didn't try to use their own cars to end the chase. According to HPD policy, there are only three acceptable ways to end a pursuit. *Standard roadblocks, using barricades or other obstructions to stop the vehicle being chased. *Rolling roadblocks, putting moving police units in front and behind of the vehicle, and slowing to a stop. *Deflation devices, which can punch holes in the suspect's tires.
